Anaheim Discovery Christian captured a sense of normalcy and closure by doing one of the things it does best: play golf.
The small, private school hosted its inaugural Magi Cup on Friday, June 12, inviting alumni to compete against its intriguing current roster at Dad Miller Golf Course in Anaheim.
The tournament served as the school’s first competition since the COVID-19 pandemic halted the boys golf season in mid-March, spoiling the Magi’s bid to reach the CIF State tournament.
San Diego State All-American Puwit Anupansuebsai and rising junior-to-be Chanachon “Paul” Chokprajakchat tied for first place by shooting 4-under-par 31 on the front-nine at the course once roamed by Tiger Woods (Western).
Anupansuebsai, a native of Thailand, earned third-team PING All-American honors this past collegiate season, which also was cut short by the pandemic.
At Anaheim Discovery Christian, he served as school’s first captain.
Chokprajakchati will be the Magi’s captain next season.
Alumnus Surapat “Pat” Chokprajakchat and senior Hyunho Eric Cho tied for third by carding scores of 1-under par. Standout senior Taehoon Song, a Washington signee, placed fifth with an even par 35.
The players wore masks and practiced social distancing during the tournament.
Co-coach Victor Chayasirisobhon awarded players trophies and hosted a post-competition ceremony at Crescent Baptist Church in Anaheim.
“To me, the goal was not to crown a winner but to achieve satisfaction, a sense of holy closure on boys CIF golf season that many said was lost but what was lost we found for a moment,” said Chayasirisobhon, also the school’s pastor. “Five seniors got to play their last round as high school students, including captain Taehoon Song (Washington), captain Titita Loudtragulngam (Tulsa) and Eric Cho (UC Riverside).
“It was a glorious day with perfect weather and the proof was the smiles on my students faces, the tears in their eyes when handed a participation trophy, and the air hugs given as we left our ceremony.”
