ESPN considers freshman wideout Texas A&M's most exciting player - 247Sports

With the run up to the 2020 football season beginning to ramp up in earnest, ESPN projected who would be the most exciting player on each team in its way too early top 25. For the most part, the selections of the worldwide leader focus on players who have multiple years in their programs such as Clemson running back Travis Etienne or Alabama receiver Jaylen Waddle. That might make you think that someone like quarterback Kellen Mond or one of the veteran returnees from Texas A&M's 11th ranked roster deserves that honor. However, their selection for the Aggies is the lone freshman to make the group and that's five star wide receiver Demond Demas.

Learning the ropes at wide receiver isn't easy for a freshman, much less without spring practice. But Demas, No. 47 in last year's ESPN 300, is such a phenomenal athlete, the Aggies won't have any choice but to figure out ways to get him the ball. The 6-3, 190-pounder has a vertical leap of more than 37 inches and was a star on the 7-on-7 circuit with acrobatic grabs.

While it's true that it might take some time for Demas and the Aggies' coaches to figure out how to work him into the lineup in a consistent basis, no one else on the roster probably has the big play credentials that he does. During his last season of high school football in 2018, he averaged over 30 yards a reception and a touchdown every other catch. He also returned a punt and a kickoff for scores and ran for five more touchdowns. He had one game where he had five touchdowns on five receptions. He has also been timed with a 4.43 forty, flashed top end speed with 11.26 second time in 100 meter dash, recorded a 41 inch vertical leap, and long jumped 23 feet 8.5 inches.

Demas doesn't just use his speed to run past people. In high school, Demas often lined up on the inside as a slot receiver which is normally a position associated with moving the chains or at most longer plays via seam routes. Instead, Demas used his run after the catch ability on crossing routes to beat people to the corner after the catch and complete long scoring plays. This supplemented his highlight reel catches in the end zone on fade routes or when he would run across the middle, go up, and pluck the ball out of the air away from smaller defenders. In all, Demas averaged 30 yards per reception during his junior year in high school which is unreal number and also scored on 23 of his 50 receptions which is a hit rate of 50%.

The Aggies have lacked players with juice on offense but started taking steps to rectify with last year's recruiting class via tight end Jalen Wydermyer and slot turned running back Ainias Smith. However, everything suggests that Demas now stands poised to take the Aggies' veteran offense to another level in that regard.
