‘Exciting To Get Back In Here’: Trainers Rejoice As Miami-Dade Gyms, Wellness Centers Reopen - CBS Miami

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Miami-Dade has taken another step in reopening its economy.

Gyms, yoga centers, dance studios and wellness centers are just some of the businesses that were allowed to reopen on Monday.

Those businesses must limit capacity to 50 percent, maintain social distancing guidelines and increase the cleaning of equipment.

Marc Megna, the co-owner of Anatomy Gym in Miami, told CBS4’s Peter D’Oench, “We are glad to be back and see all these faces of everyone getting fit. We are taking a series of precautions to make everyone feel safe, from masks to putting extra people on staff and we have extra spray bottles and wipe downs and social distancing equipment.”

Scott Grondin, the co-owner of Adapt Gym in North Miami, said, “It’s a big relief after being closed for nearly 3 months. We are following all the Miami-Dade rules with separate entrances and exits and stations for hand sanitizer and we are also talking about Lysol stations and checks and limiting class size.”

Miami Mayor Francis Suarez applauds the precautions.

“Please, please, be cautious,” he said. “Disinfect everything you touch. What we don’t want to see is the numbers go back up.”

Trainers said they were eager to get back to work in the gyms.

“It has been amazing to get back to work. We are creatures of habit and it is exciting to get back in here,” said Trainer Will Valdes.

Trainer Eriks Briedis added, “It was amazing. This has taught us a lot of things like don’t be complacent at home with everything.

Summer camps are also allowed to reopen, as well as short term rentals like Airbnb.

At the YMCA of South Florida summer camp, Tongelia Milton said, “We are taking temperatures of kids who enter the building and also of staff members of course and everyone is required to wear a mask. We want parents to know that we have safety protocols in place to make sure kids are being safe while having fun.”

Mario Cruz of the YMCA of South Florida greeted parents and children as they arrived.

“We have a ratio now of 1 to 9 for staff to children versus 1 to 15 so we can keep the groups smaller and instead of 250 kids we can only do 70 or 72 so safety is most important and we are keeping the groups smaller and everyone is wearing masks,” Cruz said.

Tattoo studios and massage parlors were also part of Monday’s reopening, as were dog parks.

Beaches, bars and clubs remain closed.
