All this week, we’re hearing from students in the Class of 2020. This morning, it’s graduating senior, potential future neuroscientist, and vibraphone player Drew Maphey of Watertown High School.

Natasha HavertyTalking with Watertown H.S. Senior Drew Maphey

I’m Drew Maphey, I’m 18 years old. I live in Watertown, New York. I go to Watertown High School and I’m about to graduate. We’ve been sitting here at home for like three months, not knowing what’s going to happen. We didn’t know if we were going to go back to school. We didn’t know if we were going to have a graduation. We didn’t know anything. That’s been the whole time. So, we sit, and we do our schoolwork but, no one has any idea what is going to happen.

I’m curious if you’ve been able to look forward to things? If there’s something your most looking forward to once you cross the threshold of graduation.

I definitely am: that would be going to college. Going to college in the fall or in August whenever that may be. That will try to get me back to a regular space that I’m used to even though that’s going to be a new experience. It’s like you're restarting again, in my eyes. It's the first time since kindergarten where you have to walk up to people and properly introduce yourself. You have to get used to knowing nobody and be okay with that, for the first time in your life, because you’re going in with no security blankets, no parents, no friends there.

So, did you go to high school with a lot of people that you’ve known since kindergarten?

Oh, one hundred percent. A lot of my friends have been in the same class every single year.

Who’s a teacher, or what’s a class who you think you’ll probably be thinking about twenty-five years from now? What’s a class you think has shaped you?

I would say my wind ensemble at the high school, which is essentially our "highest" band program you can be in. It is just because all of my friends are in there. One of my favorite teachers is the conductor and she’s amazing. Mrs. Wischerath.

It’s weird when you have one teacher for three years or four years to see your growth and to see specifically what makes you tick and what makes you improve and use that to your own advantage. She knows who you are because she has worked with you for so long. She knows what to expect and how hard to push you, which is amazing.

What do you play?

This is weird, I’m a mallet percussionist. I play vibraphone, xylophone, marimba, glockenspiel...

You’re gonna be like, the coolest guy in college having vibraphone up your sleeve! At what point during your freshman year of college are you gonna bring up the fact that you’re a wicked good vibraphone player?

I don’t think I’ll ever bring it up in conversation. I think it will be one of those things where I see one in a room when I’m with people and I just look to the side and walk over and start playing as a little party trick. Just go over and start to play a little bit. {Music...}
