LUTHER – Roger Kent will remember opening day of deer season for a long time.
The Luther resident bagged an 8-point buck on the first of firearm season. The rack spread is 18 inches.
“I shot it on the back of my property,” he said. “It was 9:27. I was looking at my phone to see what the rain was going to do. My friend said we have a little bit of clearing and maybe the deer will move. I grabbed an apple and took two bites.”
But his hunting companion Mike Leatherman, suddenly said: “here comes one, a big one!”
With 15 seconds of that, it was over, Kent said.
The shot was 72 yards through a Little Manistee River swamp.
“I went down right away,” Kent said. “I broke its back, then I shot it in the neck from our blind to finish it off.”
Kent said he had one picture of the buck on his trail cam prior to the hunt.
“I knew it was a big one,” he said. “There’s a lot of bucks on big scrapes and big rubs on trees. I knew we were looking for a big buck.”
It’s one of the biggest bucks he’s shot.
“I don’t shoot any spike horns anymore,” he said. “This is a big one.”
Kent has been hunting since 1968. This is the only one he’s shot this year.
“It’s the 12th deer I’ve seen this year,” he said. “Three of those were from the cabin window. I haven’t seen many deer.
“He’s a big one. We got a lot of meat. I’ve butchered before in the supermarket. I cut it up myself.”
Kent also cross bow hunts. He hasn’t shot a deer with a crossbow yet this year but is still hunting. Archery season continues through Jan. 1.
“I think there’s another big one out there,” Kent said. “It might be a doe but there’s another big one.”
Leatherman, his friend, a Chase area resident, is also his bowling partner.
“He hasn’t hunted for 40 years,” Kent said. “He wanted to come along to maybe see some deer. He was thrilled. He was all excited.”
