When I arrived in 2015, A&M-San Antonio was small in size but bursting with opportunity. In the years since, we have been on a mission to expand both our campus foot print and our impact in the community.
Now, five years later, we look ahead to the year 2040 and we imagine ourselves — Transforming.Tomorrow.Together. The importance of “together” or juntos cannot be understated, and our community partnerships impacting the surrounding communities will influence generations.
Great things are happening at A&M-San Antonio and on the city’s South Side in healthcare and technology advancements, community and job development, and the continued advancement of our partnerships with the public school districts in South Bexar County.
Most recently, on Sept. 28, University Health announced its board’s unanimous approval to purchase 68 acres adjacent to the university as the future site of a hospital. The addition of a hospital will spark the co-creation of health and science educational pathways and health research collaborations to prepare our neighborhood students for high-paying careers in health care and related industries.
If you have driven by our campus in recent months, you probably noticed the vast development underway along University Way. SouthStar Communities is working on a project called VIDA, a community development plan spanning 600 acres along the university’s entrances at Loop 410 and Zarzamora Street. The hospital is key to this strategic development and will join 4,000 residential units, including single-family homes, townhomes, apartments and student housing. With the university as its anchor, VIDA will welcome shops, restaurants, office spaces and 40 acres of parks and trails.
I am excited to share that this development will include gig-speed internet, the first of its kind in San Antonio, to bridge the digital access disparities in South Bexar County with state-of-the-art technology. We are excited to share in the leadership of the incredible opportunities ahead. Todos Juntos.
The ASPIRE partnership, the first of its kind in Texas, is designed as a network between the university and the school districts so that their collective voice and impact is greater. The ASPIRE network is creating opportunities and we had a very special one earlier this month. On Oct. 7, Miguel Cardona, the United States Secretary of Education, U.S. Representative Joaquin Castro visited Gus Garcia University School (powered by A&M-San Antonio) to speak with students, parents, teachers, superintendents, and A&M-San Antonio leadership. We had the opportunity to highlight the model of our ASPIRE network, which supports teacher education and professional development, while creating a pathway to college by promoting earlyconversations with students and families about understanding and preparing for college.
I look forward to one of A&M-San Antonio’s holiday traditions, which has become a favorite of mine. I invite the community to Lights of Esperanza on Nov. 30.
This holiday celebration combines the symbolic history of lighting more than 20,000 lights with newer holiday traditions. This year we will have entertainment, a petting zoo, games, food trucks, and lots more for the whole family to enjoy. This is a free outdoor event and a safe opportunity to gather and enjoy holiday cheer in our traditional way.
It is an exciting time to be a South Sider and a Jaguar. As the campus grows, so will the opportunities for students, their families, and the community. We are making a difference, and I am excited to be a part of A&M-San Antonio’s history.
