Nine exciting Peninsula and South Bay restaurants to check out this October - San Francisco Chronicle

An exciting array of restaurants made their debuts on the Peninsula and in the South Bay in September. Downtown Campbell got a high-end seafood bar from a former Atelier Crenn chef. A newcomer to Sunnyvale’s thriving Indian dining scene incorporates unexpected touches like dry ice and savory ice cream. And popular spots including Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks and Oakland’s Orbit Coffee expanded to the South Bay.

Read on for more on each opening.

One Fish Raw Bar, Atelier Crenn alum Trent Lidgey’s solo debut, is officially serving chips and dip with caviar and pudgy lobster rolls in Campbell. His fish-focused restaurant is at once upscale and playful, with dishes like $175 caviar-topped waffles, pigs in a blanket topped with house-made kimchi and champagne. Lidgey launched a new omakase tasting menu this week, served at the chef’s counter, featuring that day’s sashimi creations.

At Shosha in downtown Sunnyvale, classic Indian dishes are presented in unexpected ways. Three flavors of pani puri, an Indian street food staple, are served in shot glasses suspended below a container with dry ice spilling over dramatically. Chicken tikka arrives totally blackened, coated in activated charcoal after it’s cooked in a clay oven. Owner and Punjab native Navleen Jaggi realized a years-long dream when she opened Shosha, which means “to show off” in Punjabi. “We want to show off Indian cuisine in a different way — the creativeness of it, the flavors of it and how pretty it can be,” she said.

Pre-Hispanic Mexican Cuisine, San Jose

Head to Pre-Hispanic Mexican Cuisine in San Jose for tacos with octopus and house-made chorizo piled on fresh blue corn tortillas. Partners Cenobio Mendoza and Jesus Varguez are behind the new San Jose food truck, where they are putting their own spins on pre-Hispanic recipes. There’s al pastor yucateco, Varguez’s play on al pastor pork but with recado negro, a dark, smoky chile from Yucatán, Mexico, and a smoked salmon tostada with salsa macha. Quesadillas get amped up with fresh xni-pec, a bright-orange Yucatán habanero salsa. They’re making the tortillas from scratch through nixtamalization, soaking the corn and then grinding it into fresh masa. Varguez comes with experience at South Bay restaurants including Orchard City Kitchen, Zona Rosa and Alexander’s Steakhouse. The truck is typically parked at Moitozo Park in San Jose, but double-check social media for location and hours.

Westfield Valley Fair in Santa Clara is home to the newest location of Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks, inspired by the food culture at a famed Taipei night market. Diners can grab Shihlin’s signature extra large, extra crispy fried chicken and popcorn chicken, which come piping hot in paper bags with skewers for on-the-go snacking. (It’s also conveniently located next to Uncle Tetsu’s Japanese cheesecakes.) Critic Soleil Ho recently named Shihlin one of the top places to eat fried chicken in the Bay Area. This is the chain’s sixth Bay Area location, joining others in San Francisco, Milpitas and Berkeley.

Shepherd and Sims, which opened in September, is the newest project from South Bay restaurateur Jim Stump (the Table in San Jose; Forthright Oyster Bar & Kitchen in Campabell; and the Vesper, also in Campbell). The menu isn’t easily categorized to a single cuisine; there are kombu-steamed potatoes, seared Spanish octopus and ratatouille as well as a burger with bacon-onion jam.

The most stunning dish at Kiroro, Belmont’s newest sushi restaurant, has to be the chef’s choice box: a wooden box divided into nine squares, and in each square sits a different sashimi dish (it costs $99). Kiroro also serves an unusually large number of vegetarian rolls, plus classic rolls, chirashi bowls and special nigiri flown in from Japan.

Orbit Coffee, San Jose

Oakland’s Orbit Coffee, known for Instagrammable iced Vietnamese coffee drinks mixed with ingredients like ube and strawberry preserves, has arrived in San Jose. The Oakland coffee shops get lots of customers driving from San Jose, said Orbit marketing director Krystal Chan, so when they found an affordable space tucked away in a San Jose office complex, they jumped at the opportunity. The San Jose cafe — Orbit’s first outside of Oakland — serves drinks using coffee sourced from Vietnam, plus buckets of mini doughnuts, waffles and breakfast sandwiches. For now, this location is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday-Sunday only, until they can hire more staff.

Mendocino Farms, Mountain View

The Southern California-born sandwich and salad chain Mendocino Farms opened its eighth Bay Area outpost in Mountain View in September. The fast-casual restaurant, located at the Village at San Antonio shopping center, serves classic turkey sandwiches, but also a plant-based Reuben and Impossible burger. This marks Mendocino Farms’ 40th location.
