No trade for Deshaun Watson, so Texans will wait until offseason - Chron

The Texans didn't get a deal done to ship away Deshaun Watson before Tuesday's NFL trade deadline, so they'll have to try again in the offseason when even more teams may be looking for a quarterback ahead of the draft in April.

The Dolphins were interested in making a trade for Watson, but according to the Houston Chronicle's John McClain, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross insisted that Watson have his legal issues resolved before making the deal.

Watson's future is uncertain because he faces possible criminal charges after 22 civil lawsuits were filed against him accusing him of sexual assault during massage sessions in 2020 and 2021. The graphic details in those lawsuits include him forcing massage therapists to touch his penis and forced oral sex in at least one instance. Rusty Hardin, Watson's attorney, says any sexual encounters during the sessions were consensual. The Houston Police Department is investigating.

Despite those off-the-field issues, Caserio is determined to get as close to full value as possible for Watson, and reportedly, his demands include three first-round picks and some combination of three second-round picks or young players who could make an impact for years to come.

Besides the distraction that comes with carrying Watson on the roster, the Texans didn't have a lot of incentive to move Watson ahead of the deadline. They just need to make a deal before the April 28 draft, when they hope they'll be able to use multiple picks they receive in a Watson trade.

The Texans expect the Dolphins to still be interested in trading for Watson this offseason, and there could be more quarterback-needy teams in the mix, including the Broncos, Panthers, Eagles, Saints, Steelers and Washington Football Team. Watson has a no-trade clause and would have to approve his landing spot.

The Eagles, who Watson reportedly hasn't waved his no-trade clause for, could be especially interesting since they own three first-round picks next year and currently, they're all in the Top 10. They have the Dolphins pick, who are 1-7, their own pick (3-5) and the Colts' pick (3-5).

Watson is under contract with the Texans through the 2025 season and currently is being paid his $10.5 million salary this season, despite the fact that he doesn't practice with his teammates, but does work out at the team facility.
