EDWARDSVILLE – Edwardsville High School senior Sydney Harris is busy right now.
But after Wednesday, there’s one less thing on her list of things to do.
Harris, a 6-0 guard and multi-year starter, signed her National Letter of Intent to play women’s basketball for Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant on Wednesday on the first day of the early signing period.
“That was super exciting,” said Harris, who is playing this weekend in the IHSA Class 4A state volleyball tournament with the Tigers.
Harris said it was a relief to sign the dotted line and fax her paperwork into Central Michigan.
“I wanted to sign before the started and I had an idea where I wanted to go, so I finished it off,” Harris said.
Harris committed to Central Michigan on Oct. 29. She was originally offered on
Other offers included Cleveland State, Indiana State, Evansville, Murray State, Wichita State, SIUE, Drake, Loyola, Bradley and SIU Carbondale.
There was no topping Central Michigan, though.
“Everything was great,” Harris said. “I love their style of play and the coaching staff is offering everything I’ve been looking for to a college. I fit in with all the girls – they’re all nice – and the coaching staff is awesome. I also love the campus.”
Central Michigan competes in the Mid-American Conference of NCAA Division I.
The Chippewas finished 18-9 last season, including a MAC Tournament championship and appearance in the NCAA Tournament. It was the third consecutive NCAA Tournament berth for the program, which did have its streak of five straight regular-season league titles snapped.
“They are a team that can shoot the ball and I feel like that’s something I do well. They also play fast,” Harris said. “I really able to see myself fitting into the team right away.”
By suiting up for Central Michigan, Harris will be able to realize her dream of playing Division I basketball.
“It’s something I’ve been wanting since I first picked up a basketball. It’s a dream come true,” Harris said.
Basketball, of course, runs in the family.
Sydney’s basketball pedigree at EHS includes her grandfather, Bob Harris (1962-64), father, Rob Harris (1985-89) uncle, Jon Harris (1994-98) and brothers Tre (2009-13) and Jordan (2012-15).
Sydney’s mom, LeAnn, was an All-American at SIUE and is in the school’s Hall of Fame after scoring 1,518 career points from 1991-94. She ranks fourth in all-time scoring.
Sydney has one more year in her prep career with the Tigers.
“This season means everything. We are coming out right away to get some wins and then hopefully make it all the way,” Harris said.
As a junior, Harris was an All-Southwestern Conference first-team selection for a second straight season after helping the Tigers to a 16-1 record and 12th straight league championship.
Harris averaged a team-high 19.8 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists to help lead the Tigers to a 16-1 record and 12th consecutive Southwestern Conference championship. Her scoring average was the program’s second-highest for a single season, trailing only Denise Schaake’s mark of 21.6 points during the 1977-78 season.
“Sydney has consistently done the tough things since she came in as a freshman. She’s come in and scored and she’s developed parts of her game that aren’t easy. She’s a kid that wants to play basketball,” EHS coach Caty Happe said.
Following the season, Harris was named an Associated Press All-State first-team selection and Illinois Basketball Coaches Association All-State selection.
It was the first AP All-State first-team selection for a Tiger since Rachel Pranger and Kate Martin in 2018 and Makenzie Silvey in 2017.
Other first-team selections for the Tigers include Kortney Dunbar in 2014, Emmonnie Henderson in 2013 and 2011 and Amber Shelton in 2004.
Five of the six played NCAA Division I basketball. Pranger played volleyball for Bradley.
Harris will enter her senior season with 1,216 points. She currently ranks ninth in program history – Henderson holds the record with 1,806 points.
“One of my goals is to beat the scoring record. I’m going to have to put my foot down on the pedal for that,” Harris said. “As a team, we want to go to state.”
In the classroom, Harris was an All-SWC all-academic selection for three years. She was also named Homecoming Queen this past fall.
