Last winter, ski resorts in the U.S. were quick to embrace COVID-friendly adjustments—food trucks, pop-up outdoor dining and seating, reservation requirements for both mountain access and (often severely limited) indoor dining—contributing to a semblance of normalcy in an otherwise abnormal year. There’s just as much exciting news this year, as well as the long-awaited return of aprés ski. If you’re planning a ski vacation this year, here’s what you need to know about the most highly anticipated openings at resorts around the country.

Pacific Northwest
Forecasters estimate a likely La Niña visit to this part of the country, which if true, translates to powder for days and days—until May 2022 to be precise. Timberline, at Mount Hood, is not only the only ski area in the U.S. open 10 months of the year, but it also has the most vertical terrain in the country. If you can tear yourself away from the region’s blues and blacks, an excellent selection of Oregon draft beer is on the menu at newcomer Bullwheel Bar, inside the massive Sahale Lodge, which opened mid-season last year.
For an even more chill ski experience or for families traveling with little ones, Mount Bachelor, not far from Bend, has an enticing offer: Early riser beginner chairlift and the Woodward Start Park in the Sunrise Base Area will be free this season. To fuel up in between rides, don’t miss the area’s exploding food cart scene. Also of note, independently owned Schweitzer in Idaho joined the Ikon pass, giving passholders another bucket-list destination.
Northern Rockies
If five-star lodging is required on your ski vacations, look no further than Big Sky, Montana. Ski in and ski out with a stay at Montage Big Sky, opening December 15. The posh property will feature local art, high tea, and aprés featuring charcuterie, caviar, and raclette, plus an elevated spa. Mountain enhancements include the launch of the fastest chairlift (heated, oversized seats, and a bubble, natch) in North America.
