Women's Gymnastics Unveils Exciting 2022 Slate - University of Oklahoma - Soonersports.com

NORMAN – A tough and exciting season awaits the Oklahoma women's gymnastics team in 2022.

Head coach K.J. Kindler and Vice President and Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione revealed today the Sooners' full competition schedule which features matchups with both the defending national champion, Michigan, and the defending Big 12 Champion, Denver, along with three other schools that made the 2021 NCAA Championship.

"We are thrilled to dive into another challenging season," Kindler said. "We will meet last season's top five teams in 2022 which will require detailed preparation, confidence and impeccable execution. From the home opener against Alabama to the closing season dual against Arizona State, this schedule will sharpen our abilities and test our resolve."

The most anticipated matchup of the 2022 season will take place inside Lloyd Noble Center when the 2021 NCAA Champion Michigan Wolverines come to Norman. In a rematch of the 2021 NCAA Championships, the Sooners and Wolverines will face off on Friday, March 4.

The Sooners will have other exciting matchups in the LNC, including the season opener on Sunday, Jan. 9, as they welcome Alabama to Norman. The Sooners and Crimson Tide faced off twice in 2021 with OU defeating Alabama at the Tuscaloosa Regional and handing the Tide their first home regional loss in program history.

"Sooner fans have a lot to look forward to beginning with an always strong Alabama team and concluding with last year's NCAA Champion Michigan, set to arrive in Norman in early March for a highly anticipated rematch between the nation's top two women's gymnastics programs in 2021," Kindler said. "Once again, boosting home attendance is a top priority. The team is inspired by the energy created in the LNC and our goal is to produce the best in person sports performance for our audience!"

In a rematch of the 2021 Big 12 Championship, defending champion Denver will return to the LNC on Sunday, Jan. 30.

Other home meets include a Feb. 4 matchup with Texas Woman's University and a Feb. 11 meet against George Washington.

The Sooners will face a series of tough opponents on the road in 2022. Up first is a pair of Pac-12 battles with the Sooners traveling to Salt Lake City, Utah and Tucson, Ariz. OU and Utah will go head-to-head inside the Huntsman Center for the first time since 1992 on Friday, Jan. 14. The following week, the Sooners will head to Arizona for a tri-meet with the Wildcats and Stanford.

OU will look to defend its title at the Metroplex Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas on Saturday, Feb. 19. The Sooners will face a strong field that includes Denver, Stanford and Washington and get their first chance to compete on podium before nationals.

For the first time since 2018, the Sooners will make the journey to Gainesville, Fla., on Feb. 25 to face the Florida Gators.

The Sooners will close out the season with a quad meet at TWU on March 6 and a road trip to Tempe, Ariz., to face Arizona State on March 11.

The Big 12 Championship will be on podium this season, giving the Sooners an extra opportunity to prepare for nationals. Competition is slated for March 19 at Denver.

The journey to the NCAA Championship will have a new look in 2022 with the addition of a rest day at both regionals and nationals. Taking place over four days, nine teams will travel to regional sites, with seven automatically advancing to day two. Two teams at each site will compete in a play-in on the first day.

On the second day, eight teams will compete in two sessions of four, and the top two in each of those sessions will advance to the regional final. The break in competition will be between day two and the finals. On the final day, four teams will compete in one session, and the top two teams will advance to the finals site. Regionals are slated for March 30-April 2 in Auburn, Ala., Lexington, Ky., Raleigh, N.C., and Seattle, Wash.

The 2022 NCAA Championship will be held at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, April 14-16. Four teams will compete in each semifinal on Thursday with the finals slated for Saturday.

The Sooners return four gymnasts who combined for 10 All-America honors in sophomore Audrey Davis, junior Ragan Smith and seniors Allie Stern and Olivia Trautman. The Sooners will also return seniors and All-Americans Karrie Thomas and Carly Woodard who opted to use their extra year due to COVID. In addition to the returners, the Sooners have added newcomers Jordan Bowers, Caitin Kirkpatrick, Moorea Linker, Danielle Sievers, Madison Snook and Amy Wier.
