Liverpool beat Manchester United to transfer of exciting Spanish starlet Pep Lijnders is eyeing - Liverpool.com

Thanks to the impact of Brexit, Liverpool have had to make changes to the way that they are recruiting young talents, with British signings like Kaide Gordon, Bobby Clark and now Ben Doak and Trent Kone Doherty this summer set to become the norm.

But just before the deadline at the beginning of 2021, the Reds made a raft of additions to make the most of the European market while it was still available to them.

Along with Mateusz Musialowski, Marcelo Pitaluga and Fabian Mrozek, whom the Reds had signed the previous summer, Liverpool had to fast-track the signing of Stefan Bajčetić to beat the Brexit deadline.

In future, signing the next Bajčetić from Spain or other EU nations will be impossible until later in their career — when they will cost several times the £244,000 Liverpool paid for him.

While that is not ideal, Bajčetić, who does not turn 18 until October, has been making progress in Kirkby as he hopes to become a regular senior option for Liverpool over the next few seasons.

"We look all the time at the Academy. Our U18s played against Burnley in the FA Youth Cup; we had Bobby Clark, Luke Chambers, Stefan Bajčetić, they all stand out," Jürgen Klopp's assistant manager, Pep Lijnders, said earlier in the year.

"I hope they come with us during the pre-season because it is important for them to have a proper pre-season to know exactly how we want to do things."

Whether or not Bajčetić — or Chambers and Clark, though the former has only just finished on international duty with England U19s — are involved in pre-season remains to be seen. But that question will be answered very shortly, with the first group of Reds players back at the AXA Training Centre today.

A Spanish youth international who signed his first professional contract in November 2021, Bajčetić's father played for the Serbian national team. Manchester United were also interested in the player, who was previously on the books of Celta Vigo, but the Reds were able to beat them to his signature with a clear plan for his development.

So far, that progression has been going well. Liverpool fans who are not regular watchers of the Reds' youth teams are likely to have seen his dribble against Leeds United last season, where he carried the ball from the edge of his own box to the edge of his opponent's, before laying a teammate through on goal.

As ever in the modern age, it did not take long for the video to circulate on Twitter.

Having started with Liverpool's U16s team, Bajčetić quickly stepped up the U18s last season and also made his U23s debut. He was a regular in the UEFA Youth League and also impressed in two positions: at centre-back, and as a holding midfielder.

That versatility and technical quality that he possesses makes him a pleasing player to watch, but Bajčetić can also be tough-tackling and knows when and how to play a forward pass effectively into good areas.

Playing in a double pivot alongside James Balagizi at times at the heart of the Liverpool U18s midfield, Bajčetić will have to adjust again and play the number six role on his own to find a spot in the senior Reds team.

But he has all the skills to continue with his upward trajectory.

"We will keep helping him develop," his U18s manager Marc Bridge-Wilkinson told Liverpool.com. "We want players in midfield who can receive under pressure, be brave, and pass forwards."

Bajčetić can certainly do that. It will be interesting to see whether he is handed the chance to prove it among the senior players this pre-season.
