No details on how many are on the list, or have been reinstated
The Outer Banks Hospital and Medical Group continues to accept calls on its wait list line as a way to reinstate some or all of the 2,400 patients in the Manteo practice who learned by letter in May that they would no longer receive care at the Outer Banks Family Medicine practice there due to a doctor shortage.
Since then, through a series of videos released in July by Outer Banks Hospital President Ronnie Sloan, the hospital has announced it would be bringing on two new full-time providers at the Manteo practice – Dr. David Worthen and Dr. Erin Baker. Worthen began at the Manteo practice in July and Baker is slated to arrive in late October.
In the video messages, Sloan also announced that the Medical Group was adding a new primary care provider in Nags Head in the coming months as well as renovating and expanding the Manteo clinic and purchasing a new facility in Nags Head in an effort to provide space for more providers.
Sloan’s last video update on the subject was on July 23, but Outer Banks Hospital Director of Marketing Wendy Kelly tells the Voice that the wait list line is still active. At the same time, however, some comments on social media and in emails seem to indicate some confusion about how the reinstatement process is working.
Here is what we do know about that process.
The wait list line was initially established in mid-July exclusively for the roughly 2,400 patients whose care was interrupted. On Aug. 8, the phone number was republished to the entire Outer Banks community.
In two separate statements provided by Kelly to the Voice on Aug. 23 and Aug. 26, Kelly said that “When Outer Banks Family Medicine-Manteo has capacity to reinstate patients who are on the wait list, each patient will receive a call.”
She also explained that the process will take several months due to the limited number of patients a provider can see in a day/week and the volume of community members on the wait list.
Kelly added that community members contacting the wait list line should leave a voicemail with their contact information and should then expect to receive a return call from the medical group team within five business days.
In one of his videos earlier this summer, Sloan said that on the first day the wait list phone line was set up, more than a thousand calls poured in, but within about two weeks, that number had trickled down to about 20 a day.
To try and get a better sense of the progress being made on the wait list line and in the reinstatement process, the Voice posed several questions to the OBX Hospital and Medical Group that did not receive a response.
Those questions include how many former and prospective patients are currently on the wait list, as well as how many have been reinstated to this point.
Also unknown at this time is if there is a date the wait list phone line will be shut down. And it is unclear whether a person is manning the phone line during certain periods or if calls from former patients go directly to voicemail.
