Apple Watch Pro: The Most Exciting New Watch May Match iPhone 14 Design - Forbes

Apple likes consistency, it seems, in design. So, it makes a lot of sense that the next Apple Watch, or one version at least, will ape the styling of what we’re expecting the iPhone 14 to look like.

What can we expect?

According to a new report from Macotakara, the next Apple special event (which, we found out sooner than expected, will be on Wednesday, September 7) could be the first time since 2017 we’ve heard those rare words, “One more thing”.

Apple saves this phrase, coined by Steve Jobs and used sparingly at Apple keynotes since, for special announcements such as the first Apple Watch (first revealed in fall 2014) and the iPhone X (2017).

Personally, my guess is that they will save them for the first mixed reality headset, but maybe Macotakara is right and we’ll come across them for the new variant of Apple Watch that’s predicted, believed to be called Apple Watch Pro.

So, what will it look like? Flat at last?

The jury is out on this one, but several commentators believe that the Pro will have a flat-fronted display, like the iPhone 12, iPhone 13 and presumably iPhone 14.

This would be quite the departure from all previous Apple Watch models. Designs of a flat-fronted Apple Watch have leaked before, and many thought that Apple Watch Series 7 would adopt it. But that turned out not to be the case. In which case, could 2022 be the year we see this design, for the Pro model at least?

Regular leakers like ShrimpApplePro think so, but Mark Gurman and Bloomberg believes the new model will be an evolution of the current design rather than a more radical change.

There are some good reasons to expect a flat screen, however. For example, the Pro is aimed at fans of extreme sports so is designed to be more durable and tougher than the regular Watch.

One of the benefits of the current iPhone design, Apple has said, is that it has greater toughness thanks to the cliff-edge sides and flatter front. So, presumably the same could be said about a flatter Watch.

How about the size?

Apple pundits are agreed on one thing: the Apple Watch Pro will be bigger. Ross Young has said that it will have a 1.99-inch display, which is bigger than the 1.77-inch screen on the 45mm Series 7 and roughly means a case that’s 47mm size.

Any other benefits?

Yes, a bigger Watch will mean there’s room for a bigger battery, and therefore longer battery life.

Anything negative?

Well, it could mean a substantially higher price. Not least this will be down to the Pro being fashioned from titanium, which is currently restricted to the pricier Apple Watch Edition. Oh, and it may mean the end of Apple Watch Edition, in that case. Which I think would be a shame.

But it’s all still up in the air. We’ll know all on September 7 (though you may have to watch the keynote right to the very end) and if anything else leaks before then, I’ll be covering it right here.
