Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers get to build something new this fall, and offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich is excited about the journey. He opened up about what it’s like talking shop with the NFL’s G.O.A.T., and what he expects from their relationship going forward.
Tom Brady from ‘old school version of football’
Leftwich, 40, shared that working with the 42-year-old Brady gives them an instant bond.
“We’re pretty close in age, we’re from the old school version of football,” Leftwich said, per PewterReport.com. “Me and him talk a lot about the old days when you’d do seven, eight, nine days of two-a-days in a row. We’re from that era of football in this league, we can talk old school football, things that happened in 08’, 09’, things that are still relevant in this league, and the history that he understands, the history that I understand, the ability for us to be able to talk top level football, high level football, we’re never really on football 101 when you have Tom, you have a guy that’s been there.”
Brady has “been there” and back again. At the age of 42, he’s the oldest non-kicker playing in the NFL today. And during the two decades worth of experience he’s gained, not only has Brady won six Super Bowls but he’s put up legendary stats along the way.
With that in mind, it’s hardly surprising to hear Leftwich say “it’s exciting” working with Brady this year.
“We’re never really on Football 101 when you have Tom. You have a guy that’s been there, seen it all, and just the conversations that me and him have, it’s exciting. It’s going to be exciting to work with him to put him in position to try and play his best football. It is — he is a little older than me — we can talk a lot (of) football from the past 30, 40 years. We just communicate in that way, try to learn each other, figure each other so we can be at our best.”
Buccaneers have Super Bowl aspirations with Tom Brady leading the way
Brady inked a two-year contract worth $50 million to come and play for the Buccaneers this offseason.
Immediately, season ticket interest surged in Tampa. Since then Brady has one of the NFL’s top-selling jerseys — multiple editions of Brady’s Buccaneers No. 12 jersey grace the top-10 highest-selling jerseys in the league.
Clearly, there is a ton of interest nationally in what Brady and the Bucs can do in 2020. Given the incredible amount of talent surrounding him in Tampa Bay, including tight end Rob Gronkowski, the franchise has the ingredients to make a run at a Super Bowl this season.
