Exciting Races You May Have Missed From Desert Dream - MileSplit

There were more than a few exciting races in San Tan Valley, Arizona, this past weekend. The Desert Dream Last Hurrah Invitational featured both top national- and state-level talent. 

Let's start with the big ones:

If you haven't watched any of those races be sure to grab a snack settle in and click the links to watch some of the nation's best athletes in action.

Now for some other big races ... the ones that may have gone under the radar. 

The Pro Mile Featuring Florida Sophomore Rheinhardt Harrison

The pro mile men's mile bosted a strong field, which also featured three of the nation's prominent prep distance runners. In a league of their own were 2014 Arcadia High School (AZ) graduate John Reniewicki and 2015 Paul Dunbar (KY) graduate Kendall Muhammad; both men came close to eclipsing the sub-4 minute mile barrier. Reniewicki ran a 4:01.46 and closed in 58.861, while Muhammad ran a 4:03.02, closing in 58.90.

In high school action, Nease High School (FL) sophomore Rheinhardt Harrison clocked a 4:09.79 for the 15th fastest sophomore mile time ever. He now ranks just behind Brodey Hasty, who ran 4:09.59 in 2018, and just ahead of Mead Senior High School's (WA) Andrew Gardner, who ran 4:10.10 in 2014.

3200m Showdowns

The faster sections of the 3,200m may have grabbed the headlines, but don't count out the first sections as well. The first section of the girls 3,200m race came down to a sit and kick at the finish, with Zoe Smith taking the title by 0.03 seconds. 

Smith ran an 11:50.68 to beat out freshmen Emily Littlefield, who ran an 11:50.71. The first heat of the guys 3,200m race was the same with Northridge Prep High School's (IL) Max Elder racing Phoenix Central High School's (AZ) Hanibal Haile to the line posting times of 9:58.80 and 9:59.20 respectively.

The Pro Women's Mile

Although the race only had four women entered in the field, it was an entertaining race to watch. The group was paced through 800 meters by Rio Rico High School (AZ) graduate Samantha Schadler and worked well together through the final two laps to post some strong performances. 

But the race wasn't sorted out until the final 100m, when University of Washington graduate Anna Gibson took the win in 4:40.59. Rio Rico High School (AZ) graduate Allie Schadler placed second in 4:41.79. 

Top 10 Sophmore Hurdler

Red Mountain High School's (AZ) Yan Vazquez put down a solid sophomore time in the 300mH. The 16-year-old clocked a 39.09, which ranks sixth for the sophomore class this year. 

Vazquez also participated in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 2 inches -- which ranks 21st in the sophomore class; and he competed in the 110-meter hurdles, running 14.90 -- which ranks him US No. 3 in the sophomore class.

110mH Race

Carlee Hansen Takes Elite Girls 800m

Woods Cross (UT) junior Carlee Hansen had two stellar performances, one on Friday night and the other on Saturday night.

On Friday she finished second in the mile to Tully's (NY) Brook Ruber, running 4:49.05. She came back on  Saturday to throw down a 2:11.55 in the 800m, which ranks US No. 5 this year.
