Tippecanoe County primary: Final results have to wait until Wednesday, as counting stops - Journal & Courier

LAFAYETTE — Final results from Tuesday's primary in Tippecanoe County were put on hold late in the evening, about 500 ballots shy of the end.

Of the 21,655 people who voted, 8,747 mail-in ballots were counted Tuesday in Tippecanoe County. But an estimated 500 ballots arrived before the noon Tuesday deadline, which election officials will wait to count Wednesday morning, Tippecanoe County Clerk Julie Roush said.

Roush said that the signatures on the mail-in ballots — among more than 10,000 mail-in applications in Tippecanoe County — must be compared to the signatures on each voter's application filed to vote absentee. Four years ago, during the most recent presidential primary, fewer than 500 mail-in absentee ballots were used in Tippecanoe County.

The mail-in ballots, encouraged statewide to keep lines down at polling places at a time of social distancing during a coronavirus pandemic — then must be matched to the voter's precinct before it can be tallied, Roush said.

She expects that the ballots will be counted by noon on Wednesday, Roush said Tuesday night.

As of 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, candidates in contested races, including two six-candidate fields for three at-large Tippecanoe County Council seats, were left to wait for final results on Wednesday.

HERE ARE RESULTS AS OF TUESDAY EVENING.
