Often, the names on this list are underperformers that should usually be avoided. With all the trades made at the deadline this season, the Diamondbacks have only one candidate on this list, Junior Guerra.
The San Diego Padres found themselves in a complicated situation when they learned that Mike Clevinger was going to require Tommy John surgery. The Friars elected to buy out his two remaining arbitration years, forfeiting the first season to entirely, hoping to get value out of the second season once he recovers.
Theo Epstein is taking a sabbatical in 2021. He has also indicated that he intends to return to the game of baseball for a third chapter. After breaking the curses in Boston and Chicago, what could possibly be left for Epstein to accomplish? One path that might be particularly inviting would be to join an expansion ownership group, molding a franchise from the ground up.
