Worth the wait - Hot Springs Sentinel

Well, the modern gun deer season has officially been open for three days, and here I sit perched in front of the computer, in the comfort of my home. In fact, I have yet to grace the woods with my presence.

And why might I have chosen to avoid the deer woods for the opening few days? Well, the reasons are several-fold. Let's start with the hours just before the opening day.

The husband of a veterinarian and solo practitioner, I am not a stranger to assisting my wife with after-hour emergencies.

That being said, I was not surprised when she received a call and we headed to the clinic shortly after midnight. And as a result, we didn't make it back home until around four in the morning.

I had barely fallen asleep when the call came in, so to say I was bushed would prove an understatement. And I certainly had no intentions of donning my hunting attire and heading to the woods without getting some much needed sleep.

I suppose I could have headed to my stand upon waking, around 8 a.m. on Saturday, but I was scheduled to shoot a wedding in Conway early that evening.

Sure, I had ample time to get a couple hours of hunting in prior to the engagement, but I couldn't help but ponder the scenarios that might unfold. What if I was tracking a deer? Or what if my truck failed to start, and I was out in the middle of nowhere and had no phone service? Yep, it would prove most wise to remain home and hunt another day.

So then Sunday morning rolled around. And believe it or not, Sandy and I were at the clinic again during the wee hours. But that really didn't matter, as I seldom choose to hunt on Sunday mornings in lieu of going to church.

Now I've been known to hunt on Sunday afternoons, but this was not one of those afternoons. Our band was scheduled to practice, and I always anticipate the opportunity to fellowship and play music with this great group of fellows. They are far more than incredible musicians. They are also very special friends.

So the songs were behind us, and I prepared to bed down for the night. Do you think I had intentions of crawling out of the sack and heading to the woods bright and early Monday morning? Nope. Not a chance. I was still suffering from sleep deprivation.

It's time to face the facts.

There was a time when I functioned well with no more than two or three hours of sleep, but I'm obviously not that young anymore. And my priorities have certainly changed. There's no way around it. Ample sleep is at the top of my list.

And here we are, now. It's late afternoon, and I have still failed to make my appearance in the midst of Mother Nature. Well, I do have deadlines, and somebody had to write this article. So I chose to laze around during the morning, and here I am.

But am I disappointed or disgusted with the first few days of the season I have been anticipating for several months? Not one bit. In fact, I am totally satisfied.

Although somewhat nerve-wracking, at times, I can't think of anything I would rather do than assist my wife during times when she is helping others and their furry family members. Of course, there are occasions when emergencies do not turn out as hoped for. But the very thought that I did what I could to help the pet and support the owner is rewarding beyond measure.

The wedding? It was a true pleasure to be involved in such an important step in my friend's future. And I certainly do not regret prioritizing the worship of my Lord and Savior over a morning of hunting.

And as for my writing? Heck, you guys who read my articles are the bomb. Words cannot explain how much I appreciate the kind words and support I receive from those who follow my work.

That all being said, I suppose I'll be in the woods bright and early in the morning. And with a little luck will be feasting on fresh deer meat before this article goes to press.

But if not, I'll know that several days of season will still lurk ahead, and I'll return to the forest knowing that my bounty is well worth the wait.
