The school’s athletic department announced today in a statement that the program will “make a coaching change to get us on track to achieving our ambitious goals.”
But don’t feel too bad for Herman. According to reports, the 45-year-old coach, who rose to fame as the head coach at the University of Houston, will earn a sizable buyout of $15.4 million.
I’ll come right out and say it. I’ve never been a huge believer in Herman. When my alma mater was rumored to be between Herman and Ed Orgeron for the head coaching job at LSU, I was all for hiring the Cajun with the roller coaster of a career over the hyped-up young gun. And I think Herman’s less than “ambitious” 32–18 record at UT proves me right.
The athletic department did come out and support Herman a few weeks back, telling the Austin American Statesman that they would not be shaking up their football staff in 2021. But with a record like Herman’s, in the state of Texas, anything goes.
Steve Sarkisian, the University of Alabama’s offensive coordinator, is reported to be tapped next for the UT job.
