Satterfield wants Gamecocks to have 'exciting brand' of offense - 247Sports.com

There’s a degree of unknown with South Carolina Gamecocks offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield.

Over the last 10 years, he’s worked as offensive coordinator at Chattanooga and Temple, been head coach at Tennessee Tech, coached tight ends at Baylor and most recently served as assistant offensive line coach for the Carolina Panthers. Like many coaches, Satterfield is well-traveled, with experience at four other schools: Tennessee, Richmond, Western Carolina and UT-Martin.

“I’m going to bring a lot of energy, a lot of positive energy,” he said. “I’m going to invest in the kids. I got to coach offensive line last year in Carolina, so I’ve coached every position on the field, on offense. I think I bring a lot of flexibility from that standpoint.

“I want people to know that we’re going to play an exciting brand of football, that we’re going to have a lot of energy. Kids, when they come on campus to see our offensive staff and how our offense, what brand we put out there, when they see us practice, when they can get on campus again, it’s going to be something they’re going to want to be a part of.

Satterfield added, “How much I’m going to put into this, I think South Carolina Gamecock fans are going to be proud of the product that’s on the field.”

In 2002 and 2003, he and South Carolina coach Shane Beamer were graduate assistants at Tennessee.

“I was a little nutty, I’m sure I still am,” Satterfield said. “Shane’s always been the same, you could tell Shane was built to be a head coach, being around his dad. He always kept me under control, kept me out of trouble when we were GAs and made sure I was staying straight. The cool thing I think about Shane, he’s probably gotten me there jobs my lifetime, ever since we’ve worked together. He’s made calls, reached out to people, to help my career.

“One thing I’ve always said about Shane is how hard he works and sometimes having a last name like Beamer opens doors for me. I think he really works really, really hard (and) that he’s gotten everything that he’s gotten, not because his last name is Beamer, but because he’s a really good football coach, steady football coach that works his butt off at everything that he does. Glad that he’s gotten this opportunity and we get to do it together.”

The process of brining Satterfield to South Carolina wasn’t the traditional route. Beamer retained Mike Bobo as offensive coordinator and Satterfield was set to take over as quarterbacks coach for the Panthers.

Then Bobo left for Auburn.

“We’d talked a couple of times when (Beamer) got the job,” Satterfield said. “I was really excited for him. I was perfectly content in the NFL, doing what I was doing. I was telling him, I’m not calling you for a job, I’m just calling to congratulate you. We talked a couple of other times, just about staff, people he was thinking about hiring, did I know them, what would be a good direction for him to go in, then we just kept talking and kept talking.

“Certain situations happened where a couple of guys left and it opened a door for me to come in here, to where I am today. I think it’s just - I was a guy that he trusted. I could do the job. Really, I don’t think it was even planned, it just kind of happened through conversations over the last couple of weeks.

“But there were never conversations where it was, ‘Hey, Shane, I think you should hire me as your coordinator.’ It was just one of those things, timing happens for a reason and I’m here.”
