Raleigh, N.C. — The North Carolina Department of Transportation is letting drivers know about ways to skip the lines for registration and renewals, ahead of the long lines at the DMV anticipated in the coming months.
Summer is generally the busiest time at the DMV and this year is no different.
WRAL has learned appointments at many DMV offices are booked through July. Viewers have reached out to us to report long lines and wait times, in addition to having trouble making appointments. Producers say they’ve seen long lines at some DMV offices this week.
But there are ways you can get things done a little easier and faster without waiting in line.
Instead of showing up at a physical location, some services, such as a license renewal, can be done right from home.
There are more services you can get done online, like getting another registration card or renewing your registration.
Officials with the DMV say if you have to go inside, wait until Labor Day if you can. Vacancy rate at the DMV is high at 17%.
DMV staff tells WRAL News that they’re always looking for more examiners to help with the demand. The NCDOT added Saturday hours and expanded hours during the week to help with the demand.
They’re also working on a way you can book appointments further out in the future.
