Apple looks more likely than ever to implement a significant hardware upgrade in this year’s flagship iPhones.
According to a new report by 9to5Mac, famed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo asserts that the forthcoming iPhone 13 Pro will incorporate a new ultra-wide lens featuring autofocus. The new lens would only apply to this year’s expected iPhone 13 Pro range, with other models having to wait until 2022.
Apple’s current flagship, the iPhone 12 Pro Max, currently includes a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera that offers only a fixed-focus f/2.4 lens.
While it performs well in Dxomark’s independent tests, the quality of the ultra-wide lens falls noticeably short of the flagship iPhone’s main and telephoto lenses. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that Apple appears to be considering some serious improvements in this area.
Why is an autofocus ultra-wide lens needed?
Ultra-wide lenses, especially those with smaller apertures like on the iPhone 12 Pro Max, typically deliver a large depth-of-field which means a significant proportion of the scene is rendered with acceptable sharpness. Near and far objects all appear sharp without the need for any focus adjustments.
However, increasing the pixel count or switching to a wider aperture can dramatically reduce this effect. This means you’ll have to choose which parts of the scene you want to keep sharp using the phone’s autofocus capability. Autofocus could also help Apple to reduce the minimum focusing distance of the ultra-wide lens, allowing close-up shots to be taken.
According to Dxomark, the iPhone 12 Pro Max main camera delivers extremely fast and accurate autofocus, so any autofocus capability added to the ultra-wide lens will have high expectations.
Any significant camera improvements will come as a welcome addition in the face of recent revelations of missing iPhone 13 upgrades and the possibility that we’ll instead get a smaller, incremental update to an iPhone 12S this year rather than the iPhone 13 we’ve been hoping for.
