It may be a sad day for the Dutton family, but it’s an exciting time for fans of their decades-spanning journey. In the shocking Episode Three cliffhanger of 1923, many members of the Dutton family took serious gunshot wounds, echoing the drama of early Yellowstone seasons. Spoilers ahead, of course, for the Yellowstone prequel series starring Mirren and Harrison Ford. (Though possibly not for much longer!)
After Scottish sheep herder Banner Creigton (Jerome Flynn) and his gang ambushes the Dutton family on their way out of Billings, John Dutton Sr. (James Badge Dale) died immediately from automatic gunfire. Jacob (Ford), Cara (Mirren), Jack (Darren Mann), and his fianceé, Elizabeth (Michelle Randolph) were all wounded as well. Banner got his revenge after the Dutton family hung him from a tree due to land disputes—a tradition that continues into present-day Yellowstone, by the way—and often results in some violent retribution from their enemies if they survive. It was a shocking move from Sheridan, who seems to be escalating the violence lacking from the Yellowstone main series.
At the end of the episode, Cara writes a letter to Spencer (Brendan Sklenar) and informs him that his uncle is dying. “Your brother has been killed,” she writes. “By the time you receive this letter, I suppose your uncle has been killed as well… This ranch and your legacy are in peril. War has descended upon this place and your family. Whatever war you fight within yourself must wait. You must come home and fight this one.” Her use of suppose leaves a good amount of room for Harrison Ford’s character to live past the ambush, as it would be a pretty bold move to kill him off in just the third episode. Yet, it’s not like it hasn’t been done in prestige TV before.
Either way, it’s time for Spencer to stop hunting lions and come home. Spencer buddy, it’s your time to shine. He and his fianceé of two days just spent the night trapped in a tree as lions tried to eat them… so, I think their days of harrowing African journeys are over. The new couple vows to give up this life for something simpler. Maybe farming cattle on your family’s ranch? It’s just too bad that the situation back home isn’t any less dangerous. We’ll find out when the next episode of 1923 premieres on Sunday, January 8, 2023. Like it often goes for the Dutton family, you’re always just trading one war for another.
