Are you a budding entrepreneur? Do you like making stories come alive through video? How does spreading happiness in the community through art sound? Would you like to design a new social media app for your school?
These and other exciting project-based learning classes are part of the Ossining School District's virtual Summer Explore & Learn programs for elementary and middle school students.
Ossining High School is running two programs. One is the One Summer, One Project credit recovery program. The other is a Freshman Academy to introduce rising ninth-graders to essential concepts in various subjects, as well as digital citizenship and organizational skills.
The elementary school assistant principals are collaborating on the Summer Explore & Learn Program for children entering kindergarten through fifth grade. There are two, two-week sessions – Monday, July 6 through July 16 and July 20-30, with some courses conducted bilingually or in Spanish. Students will be grouped into three sections -- kindergarten-grade 1; grades 2-3; and grades 4-5.
The project-based learning will include daily activities led by teachers, teaching assistants and success mentors (college students); two hours of week of synchronous online learning led by a teacher; and offline independent work and assistance. The classwork is cross-curricular and incorporates science, technology, engineering, art, music and math (STEAM).
The other part of the program is 30-minute online community circles, when children will do calm classroom exercises, check in with teachers, and practice relationship skills, mindfulness, listening and responsible decision-making.
Summer Explore & Learn is a new, innovative and exciting program for Ossining students, Claremont School Assistant Principal Carolyn Rodgers said. "Since there is no summer school in school buildings for this summer, we managed to create a program that we can bring to students' homes that will have limited screen time and an abundance of imagination and excitement," she said.
"We would like students to use their creative juices and think outside the box while having fun learning and receiving high-quality instruction," Ms. Rodgers added.
Anne M. Dorner Middle School's Summer Explore & Learn Program, which takes place Mondays through Thursdays from July 8-Aug. 4, is also project-based learning. Incoming sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders will participate in six mini-project-based learning explorations of topics like teen entrepreneurship, designing a sustainable island, analyzing fake news and creating an Ossining tourism commercial.
Live sessions are Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.; asynchronous sessions are on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students will learn key academic content and practice 21st century skills like problem solving, collaboration and time-management. Students will participate in a humanities-based and a math/science-based project each week. The program will also incorporate social emotional activities and lessons on how to be successful in virtual learning.
The summer program will end with a live virtual celebration with students, as well as a movie of highlights for families and the community.
The district is partnering with Teatown Lake Reservation, the Ossining Public Library and Pace University student tutors for Summer Explore & Learn.
At OHS, the One Summer, One Project credit recovery program runs from Monday, July 6 through July 23. Students can engage in problem/project-based learning to consolidate essential concepts and skills during the three-week program. The courses available are Algebra; Living Environment; Earth Science, U.S. history, Global History 1 and 2; English 9 and 10; and American Literature. They will complete classwork through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning.
The Freshman Academy takes place from July 13-Aug. 6. Rising ninth-graders will obtain essential content concepts and skills, and learn about digital citizenship and organization skills like focused note taking. Students will tackle problem/project-based mini-projects in Global History 1, English 9, Algebra and Living Environment.
"Get ahead of the curve and organize to be successful!" the school wrote in a flyer advertising the program.
