People awaiting COVID-19 test results — which are sometimes taking as long as seven days to come back — should stay home and self-quarantine while they wait, a local health expert advises.
Testing is ineffective if the results come back positive and the person has still been out doing regular activities around other people, said Donna Skoda, Summit County Public Health commissioner.
"When you get tested, stay home and away from people until you get your test results," she said.
"People are thinking it’s like a cholesterol test and ‘I can wait and I’ll be fine,’ " Skoda said, referring to people waiting until they are actually told they have the virus before starting their quarantine. "No, if you’re getting one of these tests, you need to stay home until those results come back."
There also is a statewide travel advisory from Gov. Mike DeWine for people who are traveling back to Ohio from certain states to self-quarantine for 14 days. Those states on the updated list released Wednesday are South Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Kansas, Arizona and Idaho.
Skoda said some people are also self-quarantining after travel to other states or after they may have had interaction with an individual who could be at higher risk for having the virus.
