The Exciting Yet Scary Future of Radio-Frequency Identification Technology - Interesting Engineering

We'll give you a hint: it involves microchipping humans.

Radio-Frequency Identification Technology, or RFID, is the use of electromagnetic fields to identify and track tags associated with objects. Today, the technology is mostly used to inventory goods such as at airports to keep track of your luggage, in farms to tackle livestock handling, and even in your credit card.

But did you know that RFID tags could soon find themselves in humans? This is the future of technology and, if it happens, it could give us cyborg powers.

Imagine automatically paying the bill after picking up everything you need at the grocery store or waving your hand to unlock your door. The RFID tags could even allow health professionals to conveniently monitor your status from afar.

We are not there yet of course. Today's RFID microchips have limited functions. There is also the fact that much more research needs to be done to evaluate the safety of the technology and answer crucial questions about privacy and the dangers of the microchips being hacked.

Still, there is no doubt that we are heading in the direction of using RFID microchips in humans. Have we piqued your curiosity yet? Want to find out more about what this future holds? Then watch our entertaining and educational video.
