Charles Davis: Ravens' Offense Has Exciting Potential With Healthy Marquise Brown - Press Box

The Ravens began the 2020 season with a 38-6 blowout win against the Cleveland Browns Sept. 13, and some familiar names stuffed the stat sheet.

Lamar Jackson, the 2019 NFL Most Valuable Player, plays a key role in determining the success of the Ravens this season. He is expected to have another strong season as the team’s starting quarterback. Against the Browns, Jackson went 20-of-25 for 275 yards, three touchdowns and led the team in rushing with 45 yards on seven carries.

Other key players who contributed to the win include Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, Willie Snead and Mark Andrews. Brown had five receptions for 101 yards. Snead had four receptions for 64 yards and a touchdown. Andrews had five receptions for 58 yards and two touchdowns.

CBS NFL analyst Charles Davis joined Glenn Clark Radio Sept. 9 before making his CBS debut as part of the crew calling Ravens-Browns Sept. 13. He was excited to see the Ravens’ offense with a healthy Brown, who struggled with a foot injury last year.

“If Hollywood Brown truly is fully healthy now, you add in [Devin] Duvernay and [James] Proche, and Miles Boykin continues to get better,” Davis said. “But the big deal to me is Hollywood because all of those throws down the seams to Mark Andrews [in 2019] were terrific.

“But if you want to ring that bell against some teams, you better be able to throw it to the outside and make those big plays. And also if they’re heavy run, those throws should be available for them. So if Lamar keeps ascending … and Hollywood turns [those throws] into big plays, now where do you stop them?”

Davis touched on the importance of the team chemistry and how it will ensure their continued success this season. The Ravens have added some key veteran players, including defensive linemen Calais Campbell, who “blended in seamlessly” with the rest of the team, according to Davis.

Campbell played a key role in the Ravens’ success Sept. 13, knocking down three passes in his Ravens debut. Davis said that Campbell will be a big influence on the team’s success this season.

“Calais Campbell didn’t walk into a locker room and say, ‘I’m going lead you guys,'” Davis said. “He walked into the locker room and said, ‘Hey, I’m Calais Campbell. Glad to be your new teammate.’ And before long, those guys were following him.”

After a successful 2019 season, during which the Ravens finished first place in the AFC North with a 14-2 record, the Ravens are now trying to put together an even better encore. They kick off against the Houston Texans at 4:25 p.m. Sept. 20 and will try to move to 2-0.

Davis is interested to see how players hold up throughout the year without a typical offseason program and preseason under their belt.

“After game one, how do people bounce back? That’s your first extended contact,” Davis said. “How are you going bounce back from there? Do we have extended injuries?”

Even with the big win against the Browns, the Ravens might not have it as easy as many think throughout this unprecedented season, according to Davis.

“I just think that last year was so spectacular — going from 2-2 to 14-2 and winning the division by six [games],” Davis said. “I don’t think that’s going to happen this year. You don’t have the easiest schedule in the league when you’re 14-2 because everyone plays better and harder against you than they did the year before.”
