The Canadian crashed heavily at Mugello following a tyre problem, causing significant damage to his RP20, which was particularly painful as the team only had enough parts of their major upgrade – which included new sidepods and brake ducts – to fit one car – and Stroll had them.

Before the race in Italy, the ambition was to produce a second set of parts to give Sergio Perez the upgrade for the Russian Grand Prix, the Mexican saying on Sunday in Mugello that he was excited to get his hands on the package.

But that was before it was clear how significant the damage was.

Racing Point attempted to get two new sets of the upgrade produced but it is believed there was a delay in production and they haven’t been able to deliver all the new parts.

The team say that as Stroll is ahead of Perez in the drivers’ championship, he gets priority when there is only one set.

That means Perez – who finished fifth in Tuscany – will have to wait until at least the Eifel Grand Prix in Germany at the earliest to get his hands on the new package.
