Just a few months ago, Mitchell Trubisky’s future in Chicago looked bleak, to say the least. After the team decided to decline his fifth-year option, the offense got out to a slow start. Then, in Week 3, Trubisky was benched for Nick Foles.
But one six-game skid and one Trubisky resurgence later, has he played himself into a new contract with the Bears? Peter Schrager reports the Bears have decided to hold off on any long-term decisions.
“I’m told both sides— player, his agent, team, their front office— they have decided not to discuss anything about Trubisky’s status next year until after this season,” Schrager said on FOX Sports’ pregame show.
According to Daniel Greenberg, Ryan Pace essentially confirmed the sentiment on a pregame radio show:
Meanwhile, it’s hard to deny that Trubisky’s improved play has played a role in the Bears’ revitalized playoff hopes.
He certainly has. Will Trubisky follow in Kyle Fuller’s footsteps to become a cornerstone player after having his fifth-year option declined? Apparently we’ll have to wait to see.
