There's plenty of firepower returning for the Sterling City High School football team, which is ranked No. 4 in the state heading into the season by Texas Football magazine
"Man, we've got some great kids coming back," Sterling City head coach Trey Sisco said. "We've got four returning starters on both sides of the ball. They've been working hard in the weight room and stuff, so I think we expect a lot from this group.
"We lost a couple of our offensive linemen last year who graduated. So we've got to replace those guys with some younger guys. And defensively, I think we're there. We don't have a lot of size, but we've got a lot of speed, so we're going to have to use that to our advantage."
Sterling City is coming off a 9-2 overall record in 2019 and a 3-1 mark in district. The Eagles lost to eventual state semifinalist Rankin 86-60 in a bidistrict playoff.
While Sterling City holds a lofty ranking in the Class 1A Division I preseason poll, the Eagles are still behind No. 1 Rankin.
"We've been ranked up there the last couple of years," the Sterling City coach said. "Our kids don't really look at it and don't pay it much attention because we've got some great teams we've got to play anyway.
"We're going to scrimmage Rankin and we're going to know where we're at because they're No. 1. In the first or second round, we're going to hit them as usual. You can't really look at that sort of thing. We know we've got to beat Rankin at some point, so we'll take it one game at a time until we get there."
This past spring's realignment moved Sterling City into District 8-1A. Texas Football expects the Eagles to take the district title, followed by Highland, Westbrook, Robert Lee and Bronte.
"We got rid of Water Valley and Garden City and picked up Bronte and Robert Lee," Sisco said. "We've been in there with (Westbrook and Highland) the last couple of years, and they've got some good kids coming back."
"I don't know exactly what the (other district teams) have coming back. The district's tough and we're going to have to play every week, and who knows if we're going to have somebody gone or whatever with all of this coronavirus."
Offensively, Sterling City's trigger man has a lot of experience.
"Hudson Cox has been our quarterback the last two years," Sisco said. "He's a great team leader and a smart kid. He gets us in the right spots and gets the offense rolling. He's a key offensively.
"Francisco Gonzales is a great running back. He's probably going to get to carry the ball more than he has the last couple of years."
The Eagles' defense centers around senior lineman Chance Ferguson.
"He was a first-team all-state kid and the Defensive Player of the Year in the region, and our region was tough as nails with Rankin and Borden County and all of them in there. He's something else. He plays offense as well.
"(Senior defensive end) Jarett Justiss is a good one, too. We look forward to those seniors stepping up and leading those younger guys in the right direction."
Some other key players for the Eagles will be running back/defensive back Kamden Pruitt, running back/defensive back Cross Knittel, lineman Raul Sanchez, fullback/defensive lineman Will Sisco, lineman Desiderio Dominguez, running back/defensive back Kris Johnson and lineman Tristan Himes.
Sterling City is slated to open the season in a tasty matchup against traditional power Garden City at home on Aug. 28. The Eagles will start district on the road against Bronte on Oct. 9.
