Some Green Township residents will have to wait for internet - The Pioneer

GREEN TOWNSHIP — Plans to install two new internet service towers in Green Township will likely not take place until next spring.

Delays in securing suitable locations for the towers has slowed the process.

“We still have to work out some issues on one location, but the other one is solid,” township supervisor Jim Chapman told the Pioneer. “The definite location is at Round Lake Road, east of 190th Avenue. We are still working out the details on the location north of the river at the 23 Mile and 180th Road area.”

Originally proposed in July, Chapman said he hoped to have the towers in before fall so that students would have better access to the internet.

Hesitancy on the part of board members to commit funding before it was secured, along with the delays in securing the two locations have necessitated putting the installation off until spring.

“We are starting the process,” Chapman said. “We have a couple of things we still have to get solidified this fall and then spend the winter getting through the bureaucratic issues and be ready this spring.”

Chapman said the towers have been ordered and are expected to arrive in eight to 10 weeks. Once they arrive, they will be put in storage until spring.

“We have extremely strong community support for the project, so we are continuing on with it and moving it along,” he said.

Part of moving the project along involves soil compaction studies and surveys of the two location sites, for which the board approved a $5,000 expenditure at its meeting this week.

Monies from the American Rescue Plan Act funding were earmarked for the project in the amount of $148,000 for purchase of the towers and installation.

In addition to delays in securing the location, Chapman said that things have run a little over budget from what they had set aside from the ARPA funding, so the board will likely have to make some adjustments about where the additional money will come from.

Green Township received the first installment of the ARPA funds — $174,325 — last month. A second installment is expected in September 2022.
