Utica awaits ‘exciting’ start to soccer district after falling in bid for division title - The Macomb Daily

Utica has little time to dwell on a disappointing ending to its soccer regular season.

The Chieftains, who lost in a bid for the MAC White Division championship Tuesday night, play rival Ford at 3 p.m. Friday at Stevenson in a Division 1 district opener.

“We know them very well,” coach Carl Territo said, referring to the Falcons. “It’ll be exciting. Once you get into that phase of the one-and-done kind of stuff, anything can happen.”

Nicholas Litsas scored with Grosse Pointe South down a player and 4:15 left in the second half to break a 1-1 tie and lift the Blue Devils to a 2-1 victory over visiting Utica and the White championship.

Grosse Pointe South finished with 22 points from a 7-2-1 division record for its first crown since 2006. Romeo and Grosse Pointe North wound up tied for second with 21 points. Utica, which could have won the championship with a victory, instead finished 6-3-1 and fourth with 19 points.

“It’s hard,” Territo said. “So many of our players were emotional. They really wanted it.

“I know that they care and they are still striving to be as good as they can be and get the results they want.”

Litsas scored from about 10 yards out after making a run toward the net and receiving a pass.

“I took a touch and buried it,” the senior said.

“It’s the first league title since ’06 for South, so it’s a special one for all of us,” Litsas added. “I thought it was a really good performance from us (after being down a player), just keeping our heads in the game.”

Senior Michael Adams was the winning keeper.

“We had some spectacular defense back there,” he said, referring to the stretch when the Blue Devils played with 10 men. “We kept the pressure up and we got a goal.”

The Blue Devils played the final 19:38 shorthanded after they were called for a handball in the penalty box, an infraction that led to Jack Mahoney’s penalty-kick goal that tied the match.

Grosse Pointe South’s Stefan Smolinski scored the first goal when he intercepted a pass about 35 yards from the goal and broke in for a shot that found the mark with 34:29 left in the second half.

“It was a battle,” Territo said. “A tie didn’t do either of us any good. You have to win (the game) to win (the championship).

“One-one, we’re up a player, we’re going for it. We finished fourth out of the whole deal, which is really crazy.”

The Chieftains might have used a different strategy if a tie would have lifted them to the title, Territo said.

“Maybe you still play your own game and you see what can happen,” the coach said. “Our goal from the beginning of the year was to win the MAC White championship. We decided not to sit back; we committed another guy forward.

“We went for it, we went for our goal. It might not go your way in the end, but at least you know you did everything you could to try to accomplish that goal.”

Utica and Grosse Pointe South tied their first meeting 2-2. If they had tied Tuesday, Romeo and Grosse Pointe North would have been co-champions.

The Blue Devils open district play against Dearborn Heights Crestwood on Thursday.

“We hope to keep this momentum going into the playoffs,” Litsas said.
