Phil Mickelson will play in the inaugural LIV Golf tournament this week in London.
The Saudi-backed golf venture, a challenger to the PGA Tour, hosts its first tournament this week at the Centurion Golf Club.
Mickelson becomes the latest established PGA Tour pro to join the new venture, along with Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia, Louis Oosthuizen and Lee Westwood.
The first-place prize will be $4 million.
“Phil Mickelson is unequivocally one of the greatest golfers of this generation,’’ Greg Norman told The New York Post. “His contributions to the sport and connection to fans around the globe cannot be overstated and we are grateful to have him. He strengthens an exciting field for London where we’re proud to launch a new era for golf.”
Mickelson hasn’t played in three months since comments about the Saudi regime backing LIV Golf were made public. Mickelson missed both the Masters and last month’s PGA Championship.
Last week, LIV Golf announced 42 of the 48 players in the field for its first event, June 9-11 outside of London. World No. 13 Dustin Johnson was the biggest name on the list.
The first fallout after the rival league released the names of players who will compete at its inaugural event came Wednesday when the Royal Bank of Canada said it was dropping Johnson and Graeme McDowell as corporate sponsors. Both are playing the LIV event, the same week as the RBC Canadian Open on the PGA Tour.
The PGA Tour’s only comment was to mention a May 10 memo to players in which it denied releases for them to play the first LIV event. “Members who violate the tournament regulations are subject to disciplinary action,” the statement said.
