It’s just a matter of days until WWDC22, this year’s developers’ conference where Apple will announce updates to all its operating systems. But alongside the iOS 16, iPadOS 16, watchOS 9 and other announcements, will there be hardware announced?
The consensus of opinion is that we should get to see the redesigned MacBook Air, which is something to look forward to. But while some analysts feel that the much-vaunted Apple AR headset could make an appearance, others say it’s out of the question.
Here’s the latest.
Ming-Chi Kuo, that ultimately reliable super-analyst, says there won’t be sight of the headset, which some are calling Apple Glass, because it’ll be some time before the headset enters mass production. In a recent tweet, he said, “It still takes some time before Apple AR/MR headset enters mass production, so I don't think Apple will release AR/MR headset and rumored realityOS at WWDC this year. Apple's competitors worldwide can't wait to see the hardware spec and OS design for Apple's AR/MR headset.”
Kuo then followed up with another tweet just yesterday.
“Another reason. Suppose AR/MR headset is Apple's most important product since iPhone launch. In that case, AR/MR headset & rOS deserves an independent media event that can ensure enough time for a complete introduction and keep the audience focused throughout the event.”
I’m not sure I agree with that. After all, the Apple Watch was a very big product for the company, but its first appearance was at the end of a keynote for the launch of the iPhone 6 in 2014, followed by a separate event the following Spring.
That could absolutely be the cadence here: Apple never releases a whole new major product category immediately after it’s first unveiled. And I still maintain that WWDC is the perfect place for a sneak peek.
And, as Ben Lovejoy points out at 9to5Mac, there’s precedent for this, with the Mac Pro being mentioned long before it was fully unveiled and released.
So, where does that leave us?
Call me a cockeyed optimist, but I don’t think we should rule it out. Maybe it will be the briefest of glimpses and a focus on letting the captive audience of developers know that realityOS will be a, well, a reality, in the coming months and a time when they can start developing. My guess is that would be in the fall, that is, alongside one of the regular events later in the year.
Or maybe Apple will keep us on tenterhooks for longer…
