The first day of Strength in Depth has come to a close, and there is a fierce battle between the individual elite men. France’s Willy Georges does not have a win, but he has the points lead after an exciting finish to Event 2.

How it happened: Georges entered the second event, Havisham, with the fourth-most points, putting him within striking distance of leader Henrik Happalainen. He proceeded to quietly keep pace with Jonne Koski, who did his 70-kilogram hang power snatches unbroken.

  • The final round of Event 2 featured Koski and Guillaume Briant going toe-to-toe in ring muscle-ups, pistols, and snatches. It appeared that one of them would win the heat and secure the second-most points. Giorgos Karaves posted the overall fastest time in an earlier heat.
  • Georges was roughly 10 reps behind Koski and Briant on the final round of pistols, but he used a blistering pace and no breaks to reach the barbell at the same time as his fellow competitors. He went unbroken to steal the heat win and second place overall.

A programming hurdle: Georges has the points lead after the first day of Strength in Depth, but he was not the man in first after the opening event. That honor belonged to Happalainen, who demolished Copperfield before finishing 11th overall in Havisham.

  • The Finnish athlete completed the 1,000-meter run, 2,000-meter row, 300 double-unders, and 1,000-meter run with a time of 16:57.16. Elliot Simmonds was second overall with a time of 17:14.30.
  • The second event did not favor Happalainen. At 185 centimeters (six feet), he is one of the bigger athletes in the field and has more work to do on the pistols. For comparison, Georges is 179 centimeters. He is three inches shorter than Happalainen while event winner Giorgos Karavis is 177 centimeters (four inches shorter).

What’s next: The individual men have two events on tap for the second day of competition. They will first take on the barbell complex that has been present at previous semifinals before testing their balance.

  • The Carol Complex (Barbell Complex as programmed by CrossFit) is three attempts at three cleans, two front squats, and one jerk. This entire complex must be completed without setting the barbell down. The heaviest weight wins.
  • Curiosity Shop starts with 50 kettlebell deadlifts (80/64 kilograms). The athletes must then complete a 150-foot handstand walk, 50 box jump-overs (24/20 inches), 75 toes-to-bar, 50 box jump-overs, a 150-foot handstand walk, and 50 kettlebell deadlifts.
  • The athletes can do the entire 150-foot handstand walk unbroken if they desire. If not, they must complete a minimum of 25 feet before breaking to shake out their arms.
