Explore how exciting plant-based eating can be this Veganuary - The Dallas Morning News

Famed food journalist Michael Pollan wrote, “Eat food, not too much, mostly plants.” And it’s a fact that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is a boon to good health. But many people are daunted by change, and the idea that a meal without animal products can be delicious is foreign to some.

As Brandon Waller, founder of Dallas Farmers Market regular Bam’s Vegan puts it: “Oftentimes it’s hard to go against what you know and embrace something new, especially food! I’m just here to let you know that upon going vegan, no, you don’t have to eat dirt, twigs and grass. You can actually eat real people food — shocking, I know.”

Veganuary, a portmanteau of vegan and January, was launched in the U.K. in 2014 to devote a whole month to promoting and educating people about a plant-based diet. It’s been embraced around the world — including in Dallas. Here are two ways to learn about eating more plants this Veganuary.

Veganuary Series at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden

Every Saturday in January, the arboretum will host a one-hour cooking demo with some of the area’s most enthusiastic vegan chefs. Free with the $5 garden admission, the Veganuary Series aims to show you how flavorful meat- and dairy-free dining can be. Join chefs from the following as they cook up some easy dishes and let you sample the results.

Lucky Mouth Grocery Grand Opening

Bishop Arts is now home to D-FW’s first all-vegan storefront. Lucky Mouth Grocery will hold its grand opening January 5, after a soft opening before Christmas to work out the kinks.

At the new shop from husband and wife David Miers and Adriana Martinez, you will find bacon made of coconut, cream cheese made from tofu and milk made from oats. There are also vegan pet foods and chemical-free cleaning products. Need guidance about what you might like? Just ask.
