Albany, N.Y. — Despite the fact that some in Central New York have reported waiting over a week for coronavirus test results, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said today that the problem of delayed results is largely a worry for other states.
It’s national labs that are backed up on reporting results, not the New York-based facilities that process most of the tests done here, Cuomo said during a conference call with reporters.

“We heard this in Savannah and some other mayors I’ve been talking to,” Cuomo said, referencing his trip to Georgia earlier this week. “You can have an eight-day turnaround. You can have a 10-day turnaround from some of these national labs.
“So even testing in some states is now a lagging indicator. That is not true here.”
New York-based labs process about 70% of the tests done in the state and they’ve been returning results in two or three days, Cuomo aide Gareth Rhodes said during the conference call.
Some sites return results in less than two days, said Melissa DeRosa, Cuomo’s top aide.
“We feel comfortable that we’re looking at the most current data,” she said.
But that still leaves 30% of tests in the state that are processed elsewhere, including many done in Central New York. Most of the tests done in Syracuse are sent to a national lab, Quest Diagnostics, for processing.
Recent wait times for results have been up to nine or 10 days.
The delays are the result of Quest and other national labs getting overwhelmed as the virus has been on the rise in numerous other parts of the country.
Quest is increasing its capacity, but the backup has become so severe that the Syracuse Community Health Center, home to Onondaga County’s main testing site, plans to start sending half its samples to smaller, regional labs. The hope is they’ll return results faster.
Cuomo noted that a delay in test results means an inaccurate picture of the virus’ spread. It also means efforts to trace contacts of infected individuals are much harder and less effective at limiting spread of the virus.
“That is a valid concern,” Cuomo said. “It’s not a concern here, but it is a concern in other states.”
