Did Pennsylvania make the list of top 10 most exciting states to retire? - PennLive

When heading into retirement, there are the usual things always taken into consideration -- health, finances and living arrangements.

But what about the other things needed to help enrich your life? Retirees need excitement, just like everyone else.

From the ease of finding social events and meeting new people, to being able to enjoy favorite hobbies and have a host of activities on their doorstep, those taking that next step want a retirement full of all the things they enjoy.

Sixty and Me ranked the states to find the 10 most exciting place for retirement. It’s scoring system ranked all 50 states based on 16 factors to find out which states ranked the highest for a particular hobby, activity or lifestyle factor, and which state was the most all-around exciting place for retirees.

While the study looked at a number of factors that play a role in retirement success and enjoyment, how coronavirus is impacting a state does not appear to be one of them at this time. That's particularly noteworthy in Florida, where cases continue to be on the rise, and even in Pennsylvania, certain parts of the state are starting to see increasing daily confirmed case counts.

The majority of places coming out on top are located near a coast. (Central-northern states seem to be the least exciting places to retire.)

The top 10 states, starting at the 10th spot and counting backwards to fourth are North Carolina, Georgia, Michigan, California, Illinois, New York and Ohio. Where did the other 40 states fall on the chart? Find that out and Sixty and Me’s methodology here.

So what top three states ranked the highest as the most exciting places to retire?

Number three is – Pennsylvania

The Keystone State scores quite well when it comes to making friends (25.1% of the population are over 60) or starting a relationship (12.8% of over 65 are living alone). It’s a great place 1) watch sports with eight professional teams, 2) go hiking on 1,923 trails, and 3) golf, with 716 courses to choose from. In addition, there are ample social groups, state attractions, volunteer opportunities, and vacation destinations available.

  • Best for – those who want to socialize or enjoy sports.
  • Not suited for – those who want to be studious (only some colleges offer free courses and authors earn less than other states), or those who want to save money, as there are low tax perks for retirees, very few discounts from the state, and a high cost of living.

Number two is – Florida

Even though Florida only comes out on top for a couple categories (it has 1,147 golf courses) and joint top in another (free college for seniors), it does score high across a number of other categories.

With 27 percent of its population being over 60 and 13.1 percent of those over 65 living on their own, it’s one of the best states to make friends, enjoy a relationship and have companionship. As far as sports, the Sunshine State has 11 professional sports teams.

  • Best for – those who like to meet new people or enjoy sports.
  • Not suited for –  those wanting to start a business or write a novel. And it does have a higher cost of living than many other states.

And coming in at number one is – Massachusetts

The Bay State is where retirees who love a good bargain should consider, with it being the top state for discounts and freebies on transportation, hunting and fishing licenses, and state park access. College is also free for seniors.

Massachusetts is one of the best states to start up a business, boasting a 5-year survival rate of 55.7%; write a novel (the average annual salary for authors is $76,870); enjoy good internet coverage with fast speeds, and get involved in community-led groups around the state -- with more than 1,800 in Boston alone.

  • Best for – those who want to immerse themselves into a new project and anyone loving free or cheap fees on a variety of experiences (and who doesn’t?).
  • Not suited for – those who want to save money on their retirement funds. Even though Massachusetts offers the best discounts for activities, it is one of the worst states for taxes on retirees and has a high cost of living.
