The University of Houston embodies a new mantra that "art is all around us" through its first curated outdoor sculpture exhibition titled "Color Field."

“We are delighted to bring ‘Color Field’ to Houston for the enjoyment of all,” said María C. Gaztambide, Public Art UHS director and chief curator in a press release.

“It is an optimistic exhibition that will offer multiple touchpoints for experiencing outdoor art in an immediate and natural way.”

UH is already known for showcasing some impressive art displays throughout the campus, such as the permanent UH World Trade Center Memorial and Reflection Garden.

"Color Field" is just the latest edition of beautiful art meant to stop you in your tracks with "brightly colored, large-scale sculptures" that will be dispersed across the UH campus this October.

Presented by Public Art of the University of Houston System (Public Art UHS), the traveling show is organized in partnership with Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, and will remain on view through May 2021, said a press release.

The inspiration behind the impressive sculptures is a mid-twentieth-century painting style of the same name – Color Field.

"It's an opportunity for guests to interact with objects as they think about the impact of color on our lives.” said Allison Glenn, curator at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.

There are seven participating artists in this exhibition and their works are as follows:

• “Here” (2019) by Sarah Braman

• “Untitled (Wind Chimes)” (2014) by Sam Falls

• “Back to Kansas” (2015) by Spencer Finch

• Odili Donald Odita’s “Negative Space” (2019)

• “Forms from Life” (2019) by TYPOE

• Jeffie Brewer, a Nacadoches, Texas-based artist

• Sound artist and composer Amos Cochran’s “Color Field Outside/In” and “Color Field Inside/Out” (2019)

“I want to give people a space where there is a time duration for them to live and enjoy what they are looking at or thinking about and how that will play into their overall experience of this exhibition,” said Cochran in a press release.

In a time where the color around us may seem bleak and dismal, "Color Field" gives us something to look forward to, come fall, as we move forward and through a pandemic that brought us to a standstill.
