The Pike County Bulldogs are going to have to wait a little longer to play their first game of the 2020 season.

The Bulldogs were supposed to open the season Friday night against Beulah, but due to some positive COVID-19 tests in early August, Beulah is unable to play on Friday night.

The game, which was scheduled for Friday night, was going to be Pike County’s season opener. Instead Pike County hopes to begin their season next Friday at home against Dadeville.

“We are just trying to stay current with everything we are doing,” Pike County head coach Fred Holland said. “We are practicing like it’s a game week. We are taking everything day by day. We are hoping to play soon.”

Beulah shut down all football activities for two weeks after a player tested positive for COVID-19 on August 11. Along with shutting down practice for two weeks, Beulah cancelled their first three games of the season including Friday night’s game against the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs were originally scheduled to open up last week against Hillcrest Evergreen, but Pike County Schools decided to allow both Pike County and Goshen High Schools to only play region games this season.

“We are trying to stay positive with the players,” Holland said. “Our guys understand the situation and everything we are going through. It’s tough at times, but when the time does to come to play, we have to be ready.”

As of Tuesday afternoon, Pike County is the only local team to have their game canceled due to COVID-19 concerns. Charles Henderson is scheduled to play Greenville on Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Goshen will travel to Montgomery to take on Trinity, while Pike Liberal Arts will remain home to play Hooper. Ariton will host Houston County and Zion Chapel will host Abbeville in Enterprise.
