The Weekender: Most exciting in 2021, instant impact four-stars - 247Sports

Who is the most exciting player in the senior class? Which 2022 prospect does the 247Sports team wish they could have seen up close and personal during the summer and more. Basketball analysts Eric Bossi, Brandon Jenkins and Jerry Meyer discuss in The Weekender.

1. For your money, who is the most exciting player in the senior class? If he's not committed, what's his recruitment looking like?

Bossi: I know that one of my coworkers is going to take Alabama bound JD Davison and I can't blame them because he's as entertaining as they come. So, I'll split my vote between future rivals Jaden Akins who is headed to Michigan State and Michigan bound Frankie Collins. Both are four-star point guards and both are incredibly fun to watch, especially when they take flight. Akins is more of a scorer who plays with an element of power in the way he attacks the rim while Collins is more of a creator for others who is not only explosive but seems to just keep floating once he gets off the floor. Watching these two square off for the next few years is going to be a lot of fun.

Jenkins: Recognized as arguably the best scorer in high school basketball, Jaden Hardy is the most exciting player in the senior class. Last weekend at the Geico Top Flight Invite, he scored on all levels of the floor connecting on tough contested shots from other area codes with comfort. If the pandemic does not hold him back, he could be on track to have the best senior season of any five-star prospect. Hardy's recruitment has been one of the hardest to track thus far. He has a final list of 12 schools, but Kentucky, UCLA, and the G-League route all look to be favorable options for the No. 4 ranked player in both the 247Sports Composite Rankings and 247Sports Top150

Meyer: My money is on Alabama commit JD Davison. I would gladly pay admission to watch this Ja Morant/Russell Westbrook type player. Davison is an explosively athletic player who has an uncanny ability of delivering the difficult pass that most people in the gym can't even see. And as you might imagine at this point, Davison can finish a variety of shots and gets well above the rim.

2. Which player in the class of 2022 would you have most liked to have had an opportunity to see in person during the summer?

Bossi: While Emoni Bates is clearly the No. 1 player in the class of 2022, I can't help but feel that Jalen Duren is the least talked about No. 2 player in some time. At about 6-foot-10 he is built like an NBA player, has great hands and his ability to pivot through and around defenders is as good as I can remember seeing in some time. He is a potentially special low post player in my book and I would have really liked to see him during the summer to judge how his touch and shooting are coming along. Now at Montverde (Fla.) Academy he should be pretty visible during his junior season. He can play anywhere he wants on the college level but it is probably already fair to wonder if he ever plays a minute of college basketball.

Jenkins: After a year of not seeing him, I would have liked to see Emoni Bates live in-person to get a great look at how he has progressed since then. Each time I watched the Michigan State commitment play live, he competed with a certain chip on his shoulder that made me feel no one can claim his spot as the top prospect in all of high school basketball. This upcoming month I will get to see if the chip is still there as Bates and his Ypsi Prep squad will be traveling to Dallas, Texas to play in the Thanksgiving Hoopfest. Bates has not scored less than 25 points in each of my times watching him play and I personally will be interested to see if he can keep that streak going.

Meyer: Combo guard Bryce Griggs immediately came to mind when I first read this question. When people speak of a "walking bucket," I immediately wonder if they are talking about Griggs. Like a Markus Howard with more funk to his game, Griggs has a tight handle and a multitude of moves to get his flame thrower jump shot off. What I would love to see are the unusual angles and moves he utilizes to get his shot off. Griggs is uniquely adept at hop backs, side steps and step throughs to get a clean look. Houston, Kansas, LSU, Memphis, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech are all chasing him early.

3. Of the committed players from the class of 2021, which four-star prospect's ability to make an instant impact has been undersold?

Bossi: Each time I go back and review film of Dontrez Styles and look at how he fits at North Carolina from both a style of play and positional need perspective he strikes me as a player who could open some eyes sooner than expected in college. He's a big wing with athleticism, he runs the floor and he's built to play the uptempo style that Roy Williams loves. I know wings don't like to hear it, but I also love that he could be used some as a small ball four man to create mismatches. His passing is underrated and I love the idea of getting him into the high post to make some decisions and cause problems for a defense. I wouldn't be surprised if the Kinston (N.C.) product eventually made his way to the NBA.

Jenkins: The NCAA transfer and extra eligibility rules could possibly hinder a lot of prospects from making as early of an impact as usual. But for my money, I am rolling with Langston Love to make an instant impact at Baylor. A reliable open shot-maker who is a good rebounder from the backcourt, Love projects as someone who will thrive in Baylor's system. Jared Butler and MaCio Teague are guards who have been the foundation for the Bears' success. Love shares their qualities in how he is tough and does not make a lot of mistakes while on the floor. Qualities that will earn himself early playing time and continue Baylor's run as one of the best programs in the Big 12 and the country.

Meyer: Manny Obaseki isn't being undersold by much in that he is the top ranked four-star in the 247Sports Composite, but he isn't a five-star where I personally believe he belongs. Obaseki strikes me as a Patrick Beverly at the same stage but with more of an offensive bent to his game than Beverly. They have similar builds, athleticism and attacking mentality. I have to believe that Obaseki will have an immediate impact on the Texas A&M program the second he hits the court there.
