Is there light at the end of the tunnel for Michigan's restaurants and bars eager to reopen for indoor service?

The Michigan Licensed Beverage Association said it has been in talks with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's office and expects an announcement today.

Indoor dining was again shut down Nov. 18 and is prohibited through Friday under a state health department order in an effort to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

A reopening could be allowed beginning Feb. 1, the Michigan Licensed Beverage Association said in a Tuesday Facebook post, likely including limited capacity and a curfew.

The current ban on indoor dining will leave restaurants closed for a total of 143 days since March 16, when Whitmer issued her first executive order closing down public-facing businesses to mitigate spread of the coronavirus during the spring surge.

Recent survey data from the Michigan Licensed Beverage Association depicts that, on average, bar owners are facing $28,000 per month in expenses, while losing out on $48,000 in potential revenue per month.

The Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association, which has long advocated for the reopening of businesses, on Tuesday launched a tool that allows people to send a pre-written message asking Michigan Health and Human Services Department Director Robert Gordon and the governor to end the ban on indoor dining.

On Monday, Whitmer, Attorney General Dana Nessel and other state officials commended the majority of bar and restaurant owners for their ongoing compliance with the state's emergency health orders.

Of the approximately 8,500 on-premises liquor licensees in the state, the Michigan Liquor Control Commission has suspended the liquor licenses of a total of 34 establishments for violations due to the COVID-19 pandemic since September. Violations include allowing nonresidential in-person gatherings and failure to require face coverings for staff and patrons.

To date, there have been 525,612 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Michigan, resulting in 13,501 deaths.
