Mayo Clinic Health System changes visitor policy, official says it's an 'exciting milestone' - News8000.com - WKBT

The healthcare system is allowing two visitors per patient in clinics and hospitals throughout the Southwest Wisconsin region

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse is making some changes to its visitor policy.

Healthcare systems vow to give us good care when in the hospital, either as a patient or visitor.

“They’re doing marvelous service,” patient Sister Donna Weber said. “But I think I give them some challenges.”

Tomorrow will mark a week since the 90-year-old Sister Donna has been in the hospital.

“I didn’t think I’d still be here,” Sister Donna said. “It’s not their fault that I am. It’s whatever is happening inside me.”

But things have been getting better as of late.

“I had a very good night of sleep,” Sister Donna said.

And even better for Sister Donna? She’ll soon have some friends and family visiting her.

“That is good news,” Sister Donna said.

Starting this Thursday, April 1, up to two people can visit a patient in the clinic or hospital at Mayo Clinic.

“Because of the county experiencing low positivity rates, we’ve been able to lessen our visitor restrictions,” nurse administrator Kristine Jimenez said.

All of the regular precautions are still in place, and getting the vaccine only helps, says Jimenez.

“When a vaccine is offered, it is so important that you take that and get that done,” Jimenez said.

She says doctors and nurses provide personal support for patients without any visitors.

“It’s a priceless feeling to watch,” Jimenez said.

Jimenez calls these changes an “exciting milestone.”

“And I think this is a clear sign that we’re starting to turn the curve,” Jimenez said.

And a sign for Sister Donna to take the vows she’s learned, and spread the word to her circle once again.

“It will feel more free and more helpful to me to frame my information on my sharing with whomever is able to come,” she said.

Visitors will be allowed in the hospital except for the chemotherapy room.

People under 16 will not be allowed to visit the hospital at this time.

The Mayo Clinic Health System hospital in Sparta, as well as clinics in Onalaska, Holmen, Sparta, Tomah, Arcadia, Prairie du Chien and Caledonia are all easing the same restrictions as the Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse.

Hospitalized adults at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse are allowed to have two visitors per 24-hour period as well.
