Williams Walk-off Homer Leads Aggies to Exciting Game 2 Win - NCAT Aggies

EAST GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T took a gut punch in the visitor's seventh inning before delivering a gut-punch of their own in their half of the seventh inning to win Game 2 of a Sunday doubleheader at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex, 8-6 over Florida A&M in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) softball play.

The Aggies lost the first game, 3-2 in eight innings, to finish the weekend with a 3-1 record against the Rattlers.

Senior Stephanie Williams delivered the fatal blow to the Rattlers on Sunday in Game 2 with a walk-off two-run homer to left field.

"I love this group of ladies," said A&T coach Patti Raduenz. "It's nice to see their hard work finally pay off for them. They never say die. They never say quit. They believe they can win any game they play."

Williams' heroics occurred after a silence came over the softball complex in the Rattlers seventh when Brandice Boatwright launched a three-run homer to give the Rattlers a 6-5 lead going into the home seventh.

Raduenz had a simple message for her team as they came into the dugout after trailing for the first time in the game.

"You just gotta keep believing," Raduenz said to her team before the bottom of the seventh. "You can achieve anything if you can believe in it."

The belief started becoming a reality when freshman Alylxx Estrada hit a one-out double to right field. Senior Samantha Ramirez then singled up the middle to score Estrada to tie the game at 6. The plot thickened when freshman Kendally Macauley lined out to left.

Williams then took the first pitch she saw from FAMU starter Nadia Zenteno and drove over the left-field fence to lift the Aggies (7-17, 7-1 MEAC) to their seventh win in eight games.

Williams went 2-for-4 with four RBI in Game 2. Estrada had a 3-for-3 second game with three runs scored. Ramirez went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Macauley drove in two runs.

Freshman Kiara Richards (4-5) got the win in the circle after pitching seven innings, giving up six runs, three walks and striking out four.

In the first game, sophomore Jai Deese went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Macauley also drove in a run in Game 1.

Stinson (3-6) took the tough-luck loss after pitching eight innings, giving up three hits, seven walks and striking out seven. Gabriella Williams got the win after she went eight innings and walked two while giving up six hits and striking out two.

Like in the second game, the Aggies had a lead late but lost it. But in Game 1, they were not able to get it back.

The Aggies manufactured a run in the first inning to get the lead as Deese singled and moved to second on a stolen base. After a walk to Estrada, a Ramirez fly out advanced Deese to third. Macauley brought Deese home with a groundout for a 1-0 Aggies lead.

The Rattlers (1-15, 1-4 MEAC) tied the game at 1 in the second inning. A&T retook the lead, however, in the fifth as the Aggies manufactured another run. Junior pinch-hitter Desttany Parker walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior Eternal Fuller. Parker went to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI sac fly from Deese to give the Aggies a 2-1 lead.

FAMU's Janae Brown tied the game in the visitor's seventh with an RBI single to right to score pinch-runner Kyami Cruz.

In the eighth, pinch-hitter Makiya Giles earned a lead-off walk. Pinch running for Giles; Mia Blasingane stole second to move the go-ahead run into scoring position.

After a two-out walk to Sydnee Worthy, Boatwright singled through the left side to load the bases. With Anizya Vargas at the plate, a 2-1 pitch got away from Aggies catcher Jocelyn Bennett allowing Blasingane to score the eventual winning run.

The Aggies did put the winning run on base in the home seventh as Williams earned a two-out single and junior Vivica Boyd followed with a walk. But Bennett flew out to left to end the rally.

The Aggies will face future Big South opponent Campbell at 6 p.m., Wednesday, March 24, in Buies Creek, N.C.
