GLENSIDE, Pa.—Freshman Peter Weaver (Frontenac, Mo.) led all players with seven birdies and joined graduate student Ambrose Abbracciamento (Newtown, Pa.) in a three-way tie atop the leaderboard after an exciting finish to the LuLu Spring Invite early Saturday evening. St. John's was the top team at the local event hosted by Villanova with a score of 279 for the day, while the Wildcats shot 288 and La Salle posted a score of 308.
It was the battle for individual medalist honors – a contest which was ultimately had no answer – which had the most intrigue. The players from St. John's had tee times nearly an hour before the final group of Villanova players got onto the course. As a result, Alex Kyriacou from the Red Storm was in the clubhouse with a score of 67 (-4) while the Wildcats still had several holes to play on the par-71 course which played 6,433 yards from the black tees at LuLu Country Club.
Weaver pushed his score to five-under through 11 holes after he went out in 32, while Abbracciamento after a birdie at the 10th hole. Sophomore Matt Minerva (Elmsford, N.Y.) was also in contention for the individual lead at that point. Playing for Villanova's "B" lineup, Minerva was two-under through 11 holes and ahead of his teammates on the course. He made a birdie on the 17th to get his score to three-under with a chance to pull even with Abbracciamento, but ultimately wound up two strokes off the lead.
After a bogey at No. 13 dropped Weaver back to four-under, it was just he and Kyriacou tied for the lead when Abbracciamento bogeyed the 14th to drop to three-under. The thrilling finish was only starting to gain steam, however. Abbracciamento pulled back even with a birdie on No. 15, bogeyed the 16th, but rolled in his sixth birdie of the day at No. 17 before a par on his final hole settled him in at four-under for the day.
Weaver had sole possession of the lead after he made his seventh birdie of the day on the par-5, 515-yard 17th hole, but a bogey at No. 18 restored the three-way tie to finish off the round. The 18th hole was one of the harder ones on the course during the day, as it produced 11 scores of bogey or worse. The field of 28 players from four different schools combined to play No. 18 at +13 for the day. The average round score in the field was 75.21.
There were four Wildcats in the top-10 on the leaderboard. In addition to Weaver and Abbracciamento finishing in a tie for the lead, Minerva wound up tied for fourth place with his two-under score of 69. Senior Reb Banas (Winnetka, Ill.) played for the Villanova "B" squad and finished 10th with a score of 74 (+3).
Junior Noah Peck (Hunt Valley, Md.) carded a 76 and sophomore Luke Alexander (Rochester, Minn.) came in with a 77. Also in action on the day were the trio of freshman Jonathan Elkins (South Deerfield, Mass.), junior Jack O'Hara (Loudonville, N.Y.) and senior Max Siegfried (Villanova, Pa.) who each shot 78, as well as junior Matt Davis (Newtown Square, Pa.) who carded a 79 and junior Danny Dougherty (Wilmington, Del.) with a score of 82.
The lineup for the Wildcats featured Weaver, Abbracciamento, Peck, Siegfried, Elkins and Davis. The team's "B" squad consisted of Minerva, Banas, Alexander, O'Hara and Dougherty.
Villanova has a busy local stretch coming up and will next play in the Columbia Spring Invitational at Rolling Green Golf Club next Saturday.
