Yankees veteran pitcher Corey Kluber was named the No. 2 in the pitching rotation by manager Aaron Boone on Sunday, prior to his start against the Phillies.

The two-time Cy Young Award winner allowed three hits and two runs over 3.1 IP, while striking out five batters and throwing 73 pitches (39 strikes) in the loss. He left the game with the bases loaded in the third inning, but returned to pitch the fourth as allowed by spring training rules.

"Yeah, it's kind of one of the benefits of the rules as you're in spring," Kluber said. "You can get taken out of innings, still go out and get your work in. I'd rather do that than go down to the bullpen and finish. As far as the buildup and everything, I'm kind of right where we need to be."

Kluber is looking forward to getting back on the mound in a regular season game, after having a strong and healthy spring training.

"I don't if I'd say relief, I mean I think that's the probably expectation that I had," Kluber said, "I get what you're saying though, with things not going my way the last couple of years. But I still expected to feel the way I do now. That being said, I do think I'm excited to get to the regular season. The progression in spring has been good in spring, and now for me, my next one is gonna be one that counts. It's exciting and I'm looking forward to it."

The 34-year-old threw just one inning for the Texas Rangers during the 2020 season before a shoulder injury ended his year. He hopes to overlook the nerves and settle into the game, as he's scheduled to start against the Toronto Blue Jays on April 3.

"We'll have to wait and see," Kluber said. "I think that probably whenever that day comes, when I'm pitching and stuff, we'll probably have to wait and see what it feels like. I'd imagine that hopefully I can get past one inning this time, but imagine that there will be some butterflies going into it. But I have those for any start, I have those for live BP, spring training starts, whatever. I just think that it means that it means something to you."
