10 of Michigan’s most exciting girls basketball state title games of the last 10 seasons - MLive.com

With the MHSAA set to crown four girls state basketball champions in a season that delayed and in doubt of being completed because of COVID-19, what better time to take a look back at 10 of the most exciting championship games in the last 10 seasons?

We actually went back 11 years when compiling our list since last year’s tournament was never completed because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Here’s our list.

No. 10: Morley-Stanwood 61, Grosse Pointe Liggett 57

This 2012 Class C final wasn’t so memorable because of the game itself, although it was a very good one.

Instead, it was the offensive fireworks from Liggett’s Madison Ristoviski.

Ristoviski scored 42 points, which remains the second-highest total in a girls championship game. She made 15 of 29 shots from the field, including 4 of 8 on 3-point attempts. She also sank 8 of 9 free throws while playing all 32 minutes.

Ristoviski had a chance to force overtime with her team trailing 59-57 but her mid-range jumper missed its mark.

Alexis Huntley made two free throws in the waning seconds to seal the victory and cap a perfect 28-0 season for Morley-Stanwood. She finished with 27 points, Bailey Cairnduff added 18 and Elyse Starck had 10.

Liggett finished with a 22-5 record.

Goodrich 2012

No. 9 Goodrich 60, Grand Rapids CC 53

The 2012 Division 2 title game was closer than the score seems to indicate.

The lead changed hands 16 times and was tied seven times before Goodrich finished the game on a 9-2 run in the final 2:07.

The win capped a perfect 28-0 season for Goodrich, which was ranked No. 1 in the final Associated press poll and featured three Division I players – Taylor Gleason, Aketra Sevillian and Frankie Joubran.

Joubran led Goodrich with 16 points, Sevillian had 13 and Destiny Stephens chipped in 11.

Stokes had 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead GRCC. Alyzia Dilworth supplied 13 points and Shellis Hampton added 12.

Stokes and Hampton were four-year starters who lost a total of nine games in their careers and won a state title in 2010.

The championship was the first of two straight for Goodrich.

The 2019 Division 4 championship game was tight virtually the entire way.

She also had 13 rebounds and six assists. Sister Dani Salenbein led Lenawee Christian with 19 points and the Cougars’ defense held St. Ignace to a season-low 46 points.

Emily Coveyou led St. Ignace with 17 points while Hallie Marshall and Emmalee Hall had 10 apiece. Hart’s basket in the final minute cut Adrian Lenawee’s four-point lead in half just before the buzzer.

Lenawee Christian finished with a 26-2 record while St. Ignace ended 27-1 after being denied its first unbeaten season. St. Ignace led 17-16 after the first quarter before trailing 32-30 at halftime and 38-37 heading to the fourth quarter.

Kierra Fletcher

No. 7: Warren Cousino 67, Detroit King 65

Cousino looked as if the final eight minutes of the 2016 Division 1 title game was going to turn into a victory lap after the Patriots built a 19-point in the third quarter.

But nobody told King’s players the game was supposed to be over.

King cut the deficit to five points early in the fourth quarter only to see Cousino regain a double-digit lead when Kierra Fletcher made a three-point play with 5:06 left to hike the Patriots’ lead to 57-47.

But King still wasn’t finished.

The Crusaders chipped away the deficit again, scoring four points in the final seven seconds before time finally ran out, according to a story on MHSAA.com.

Fletcher led Cousino with 27 points as the Patriots finished the season with a 23-4 record. MacKenzie Anderson added 20 points for Cousino.

An 18-point lead with less than two minutes left in the third quarter of the 2012 Class A state championship game wasn’t enough for Grosse Pointe South to win its first girls basketball state championship.

Grand Haven bagged the final six points of the third quarter and then outscored Grosse Pointe South 22-9 in the fourth to win the first of two straight state titles.

Shar’Rae Davis provided the winning basket for Grand Haven on a layup with six seconds left. It came moments after Cierra Rice’s 3-pointer gave Grosse Pointe South a 53-52 lead with 13 seconds to play.

Davis scored 10 of her 19 points in the fourth quarter. Abby Cole added 18 points, eight rebounds and eight blocks for the Buccaneers (27-1).

Rice led Grosse Pointe South (23-4) with 14 points, Clare DeBoer added 13, Caitlin Moore had 12 and Catherine Palazzolo chipped in 10.

No. 5: Detroit Edison 46, Pewamo-Westphalia 44

Edison had never won a district championship before capturing the 2017 Class C title while giving the world a sign of things to come. The Pioneers also won the 2018 state title in Class C before moving up to Division 2 and winning the 2019 championship.

Rickea Jackson, the 2019 Miss Basketball Award winner in Michigan, scored a game-high 21 points in the 2017 championship game. Shaulana Wagner added 12.

Edison led by nine points barely a minute into the fourth quarter before Pewamo-Westphalia came roaring back, trimming the deficit to one with 1:19 to play. A 3-point attempt by Pewamo-Westphalia in the final minute missed its mark.

Pewamo-Westphalia trailed for all but 14 seconds, when the scored was tied, according to a story on MHSAA.com. Edison led 12-8 after the first quarter, 26-19 at halftime and 38-31 heading to the fourth quarter, when Pewamo-Westphalia outscored the Pioneers 13-8.

No. 3: St. Ignace 64, Pittsford 60 (OT)

St. Ignace, making its sixth straight appearance in the final four, won its second Class D state championship in three years thanks to one of the greatest comebacks in finals history.

The Saints trailed 34-21 at halftime in 2015 after missing all nine of its 3-point attempts, according to a story on MHSAA.com, and the deficit grew to 20 points two minutes into the second half before St. Ignace began climbing out of its deep hole.

St. Ignace gradually cut into the deficit, finally tying the score at 54-54 with 35 seconds left in regulation on a free throw by Abbey Ostman. It marked the first time the game had been tied since early in the first quarter.

Ostman put the Saints (22-5) in front with the first two baskets of overtime and the Saints never trailed again. She led St. Ignace with 31 points and 10 rebounds. Margo Brown added 19 points.

Four players score din double figures for Pittsford (26-1) led by Laura Smith’s 14. Pittsford would go on to win the 2017 and 2018 state titles.

As for the St. Ignace comeback, it matched the biggest in MHSAA history. Detroit Cass Tech also trailed Saginaw by 20 in the 1987 Class A state final before rallying for a 52-51 victory.

Hannah Wilkerson

No. 2: Grand Haven 60, Grosse Pte South 54 (OT)

Senior Abbey Cole scored four of her 11 points in overtime as Grand Haven repeated as Class A state champions in 2013 after blowing a nine-point lead in the fourth quarter.

Grand Haven finished 28-0.

The game was just the seventh in finals history to go to overtime and the first to reach OT in Class A history.

Hannah Wilkerson had 17 points for Grand Haven and Taylor Craymer added 14 points. Cole had 11 despite spending most of the second half on the bench with foul problems.

Cierra Rice had a game-high 24 points for Grosse Pointe South (25-2).

Grand Haven became the first repeat champion in Class A since Lansing Everett in 2000 and 2001.

The game was a rematch of the 2012 championship game.

Hamady-2010-2

No. 1: Flint Hamady 68, St. Igance 66 (2OT)

It’s always a nail-biter to see a championship game go to overtime in any sports.

But double overtime in 2010?

Well, that’s just outrageously fun.

But if any team was prepared for a double OT title game, it was Hamady. Three of Hamady’s final five games en route to its second straight Class C championship went to overtime and all were against ranked teams.

Kathryn Thomas’ free throw for Hamady with 3.7 seconds left in the fourth quarter sent the game to the overtime and Porsha Fluker’s free throw with 30.1 seconds go in the first OT forced a second extra session.

The Hawks finally won it on senior Kiyana Dudley-Thompson’s layup just before the final buzzer in the second OT.

Arlesia Morse had 26 points and 14 rebounds to lead Hamady (25-3). Fluker added a career-high 25 points,

St. Ignace’s Nicole Elmblad scored 16 of her team’s final 18 points en route to a game-high total of 36, the third-highest in a state championship game at the time.

St. Ignace finished 25-2 after losing just the second double-overtime game in MHSAA finals history.
