FAIR LAWN, NJ — Mondelez, known to locals as the Nabisco Plant, is set to close in July, but Mayor Kurt Peluso remains upbeat about several suitors who are inquiring about occupying the space.
Most recently, Peluso said Wegmans, a large scale grocery chain, is considering the spot. Prior to this news, the mayor said a movie and television production company was looking at the space.
Currently, the Mondelez property is assessed at $29,319,600, according to Fair Lawn borough tax records, with the 2021 tax bill at $1,005,662.
Earlier this week U.S. Representative Bill Pascrell (D-NJ-09), Chairman of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Oversight, sent out a press release about a letter the committee sent to Mondelez corporate "demanding information on the company’s recent facility closures in Fair Lawn, New Jersey and Atlanta, Georgia, and the company’s outsourcing of American jobs"
Lawmakers provided more numbers that affect U.S. employment in the letter to Mondelez corporate:
"We understand that Mondelez has been shifting operations out of the U.S. for the past several years, resulting in the loss of union jobs. In 2015, Mondelez announced to corporate shareholders that several product lines known as “Power Brand Products” would be shifted to Mexico. Within months, Mondelez closed its Philadelphia, Pennsylvania bakery where Oreo and other brands were made by 450 workers. The next month, Mondelez announced the additional investment of $130 million in its new plant in Salinas Victoria, Nuevo León, Mexico. Continuing this pattern, it is our understanding that workers in the firm’s Chicago, Illinois bakery were informed around this same time that Mondelez was moving 9 of 16 production lines from there to Mexico. Less than a year later, Mondelez announced 600 workers would be laid off from the Chicago Nabisco bakery.
