Editorial: Mountain coaster exciting prospect - Albuquerque Journal

Phoenix has the Desert Storm Roller Coaster. Denver has The Cyclone. And Albuquerque has the New Mexico Rattler. But none of those amusement park coasters is like the alpine mountain coaster proposed for the Sandia Peak Ski Area.

The gravity-powered mountain coaster would take riders from the apex of Sandia along 3,000 feet of S-shaped elevated track beneath the forest canopy, ending with a cable-powered ascent to the starting point.

The alpine ride would be on the east side of the Sandia mountains, out of view from Albuquerque, and wouldn’t run at night nor impact trails maintained by the U.S. Forest Service.

There are those who worry about noise, the impact on wildlife, losing a hiking or mountain biking trail, and increased traffic and crowds. Some say they don’t want an amusement park atop the mountain or a water park to follow, but there are no plans for any other rides and proper mitigation efforts can alleviate many of the concerns.

If done right, the mountain coaster could be as iconic as the Sandia Peak Tramway or the Pit and make the upper tram area an even more exciting year-round attraction.
